Colombia’s ambassador meets with Venezuelan president on reestablishing ties

BOGOTA, Colombia
Colombia’s ambassador to Venezuela, Armando Benedetti, met Monday with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Maduro welcomed Benedetti at the Palacio de Miraflores, the presidential residence in Caracas, to discuss the need to reestablish diplomatic and commercial ties between their two nations after years of deteriorating relations. The two held a friendly meeting in which they exchanged traditional gifts from each country. The reunion was made public by Benedetti, who presented his credentials as ambassador of his country in Caracas. "We spoke with President Nicolas Maduro about the urgency of reestablishing the ties of friendship that should never have been broken," he said on Twitter. Relations between the two countries were severed in 2019 when former Colombian President Ivan Duque supported Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido and his efforts to oust Maduro three years ago. Embassies and consulates in both countries were closed, as well as the border between the two countries. Leftist leader Gustavo Petro was sworn in earlier this month as the new president of Colombia with the pledge of rebuilding diplomatic relations with Venezuela. “I welcomed Armando Benedetti, Ambassador-designate of Colombia to Venezuela. We are peoples with a glorious history of rebellion and freedom, united in deep Bolivarian brotherhood. May our union be unbreakable,” Maduro said on his Twitter account. The president´s emissary, Felix Plasencia, is scheduled to meet Petro in the coming days. Reestablishing trade relations is one of the main objectives of Benedetti, who said that more than 8 million Colombians live from binational trade with Venezuela. Surjewala Meets Muniyappa Amid Speculations of Him Leaving Congress

Amid recent speculations about him quitting the party, Congress national General Secretary in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala on Sunday met veteran party leader K H Muniyappa and held talks. There were speculations about the former Union Minister joining the BJP following his meeting with Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Health Minister K Sudhakar on August 26. However, Muniyappa, who is upset with the State Congress leaders for their decision to admit a couple of local leaders in Kolar into the party without his knowledge, had immediately clarified that there is no question of him leaving the party and that his meeting with CM was regarding the development of Adi Jambava mutt. Both AICC General Secretary and Muniyappa maintained that today’s meeting was personal in nature as they share a cordial bond from the time of Surjewala’s father. ”I had come here to meet him (Muniyappa) , as also to discuss the Bharat Jodo Yatra of Rahul Gandhi and the campaign related to it in Karnataka, as also to see that the downtrodden sections which he has championed for the last three decades of his life- their issues are addressed by the Congress party in a most effective manner,” Surjewala told reporters after the meeting. Noting that it was a personal visit, Muniyappa said they also discussed organising the party and bringing it back to power in the state. ”I have already aired my concerns to the high command- Sonia and Rahul Gandhi- also to Surjewala earlier and will wait for their decision…..I’m in the Congress party and will remain in it. There will be certain ups and downs in a large party and one can do nothing about it,” he said responding to a question. Muniyappa, a veteran leader, who has been a member of Lok Sabha seven times, had recently expressed displeasure over State Congress president D K Shivakumar and Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah keeping him away while deciding on admitting local leaders M C Sudhakar and Kothanur Manjunath into the party. He is also said to be upset at few of his own partymen for causing his defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, and particularly angry at former Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar, who is Srinivaspura MLA in Kolar district, for the the way in which Congress affairs have been managed in the district, which has for long been a Congress stronghold. Muniyappa had openly hit out at Ramesh Kumar on several instances. Read all the Latest Politics News and Breaking News here

Blinken meets with family of slain Al Jazeera journalist

ANKARA

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Tuesday with the family of Shireen Abu Akleh, a veteran journalist who was shot dead in May while covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for the Al Jazeera news outlet.

"Today I met with the family of slain Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, whose fearless journalism earned her the respect of audiences around the world. I expressed my deepest condolences and commitment to pursue accountability for her tragic killing," Blinken said on Twitter.

He also shared pictures of the meeting.

Abu Akleh, a 51-year-old Palestinian-American, was shot dead on May 11 while covering an Israeli military raid near the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.

While Palestinian officials and Al Jazeera accused Israel of killing the reporter, Tel Aviv denied any responsibility.

Earlier in July, the family had harshly criticized the results of an investigation where the US avoided remarks that held Israel responsible for her killing.

"We, the family of Shireen Abu Akleh, write to express our grief, outrage and sense of betrayal concerning your administration’s abject response to the extrajudicial killing of our sister and aunt by Israeli forces on May 11, 2022, while on assignment in the occupied Palestinian city of Jenin in the West Bank," family members said in a long letter to US President Joe Biden.

It underlined that the journalist, who was also a US citizen, was killed by an Israeli-fired bullet to the head, despite wearing a protective helmet and a blue bulletproof vest that was marked "press.”
