Turkish association in Germany receives racist death threat letter

COLOGNE, Germany A Turkish cultural center in the German town of Neuss received a racist letter with death threats, the head of the center said Tuesday. Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Tansel Ciftci said the Neuss Turkish Cultural Center was the target of racists for the second time in two weeks. "A letter came in the mail today. It was signed with a swastika and ‘NSU 2.0’ and included racist statements like 'We will burn down your mosques and kill you Turks,’" said Ciftci, noting that members of the cultural center as well as locals of Turkish descent in Neuss are in fear and anxiety over the recent incidents. NSU 2.0 refers to the National Socialist Underground, a neo-Nazi extremist group uncovered in 2011 that murdered 10 people and planted three bombs. "Two weeks ago, the windows of our building were broken in an attack on our association. Due to the frequency of these events, our members and those living here began to feel uneasy. We want the authorities to arrest those responsible and impose the necessary punishment," Ciftci added. He further emphasized that they are living in the middle of Europe with death threats and called it "unacceptable." Ciftci also noted that the police, to whom they filed a criminal complaint, had begun an investigation into the incidents. Germany has witnessed growing racism and Islamophobia in recent years, fueled by the propaganda of neo-Nazi groups and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. With a population of over 84 million people, the country has the second-largest Muslim population in Western Europe after France. Watch cloudburst over Jamshoro as Sindh receives highest ever rainfall in 24 hours

JAMSHORO: Cloudburst hovered above Jamshoro on Friday as the city witnessed record downpour at 355mm.

Climate Change Minister Senator Sherry Rehman took to her Twitter to share the video, claiming that this was the heaviest ever rainfall recorded across Sindh in one day.

In a time-lapse video, which has now gone viral on social media, cloudburst appear drenching the city and setting a new record for heavy downpour in the span of 24 hours. The last heaviest rainfall recorded in Jamshoro within 24 hours was at 238mm on August 31, 2011.

“Today on 19 Aug 2022 we recorded the heaviest rainfall ever in one day all over Sindh,” she tweeted, crediting the Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) for the video.

The minister deemed the cloudburst over Jamshoro “unprecedented” and mentioned how many areas witnessed non-stop rain for three days.

PMD predicts more rainfall

Earlier today, PMD predicted more rainfall across the country including warnings of flash flooding, particularly in Sindh and Balochistan, between August 19 and 24.

The Met department also advised authorities to remain alert in case of emergencies following the extreme weather.

On August 23 and 24, rainfall with wind and thundershowers is expected to drench Sindh, south Punjab, south and northeastern Balochistan.

PMD warned that urban flooding may affect Sukkur, Dadu, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Shaheed Benazirabad on August 19 and 20.

On the other hand, Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu and Sukkur could also be impacted with urban flooding on August 23 and 24.

Met department shared that low pressure area over upper Sindh is likely to weaken during the next 12 hours, while another low pressure area is likely to approach Sindh from August 23.

“Due to this weather system, monsoon currents are penetrating in upper and southern parts of the country,” a press statement by Met read.
