The death toll from a boat that capsized while carrying flood affectees near Sindh’s Bilawalpur earlier today is presumed to have surpassed 10 after officials said on Monday a search for more people is underway.
The deputy commissioner said that the death tolls rose to 13; while eight people have been rescued. Rescue sources said that nearly 25 flood victims were being taken to the relief camps when the incident took place.
A total of seven people, including children, drowned as the boat capsized, their bodies have been rescued and recovered.
A huge relief operation is underway in Pakistan as the country struggles to deal with monsoon flooding that has affected more than 33 million people.
Officials said 1,136 people have died since June when the seasonal rains began, but the final toll could be higher as hundreds of villages in the mountainous north have been cut off by flood-swollen rivers washing away roads and bridges.
Officials said this year's flooding has affected more than 33 million people — one in seven Pakistanis — destroying or badly damaging nearly a million homes.

PM Shehbaz vows to overcome flood related issues with collective efforts
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif during a visit to Sujawal district of Sindh on Saturday expressed the resolve to overcome flood related issues with collective efforts.
He made the remarks during a visit to Sujawal district of Sindh on Saturday where representatives of concerned departments briefed him about the devastation caused by the calamity.
The Prime Minister said the entire country is badly affected with flash floods due to incessant monsoon rains.
He said the heavy downpours in the season has caused human losses, damaged road and infrastructure across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan.
He said a collective policy will be framed in collaboration with the provinces for the relief and rehabilitation of flood affected people.
On the occasion, Shehbaz Sharif also appreciated the efforts of the Chief Minister Sindh, administration and the armed forces for their rescue and relief operations in these areas.
Later, talking to the affected people, the Prime Minister said the federal government has allocated a grant of 38 billion rupees to support each flood affected family with disbursement of 25,000 rupees.
He said a grant of 15 billion rupees has already provided to Sindh province while the distribution of flood relief amount among each family has also commenced in Sindh province under Benazir Income Support Programme.
Shehbaz Sharif said with the support of National Disaster Management Authority and other relevant departments, the federal government will continue to support the provincial governments in the rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts.
He said that a combined survey would be completed soon which would enable them to get an estimate of the damages and losses caused by floods across the country.
The Prime Minister said politics over the agreement with International Monetary Fund could cause irreparable damage to Pakistan as an IMF board is scheduled to hold a meeting on Monday

Sindh flood situation gets worse after heavy rains
Areas which received light, moderate and heavy rains include Tando Allahyar, Sanghar, Hyderabad, Matiari, Mirpurkhas and Badin. More than 400 mud houses collapsed as a result of recent showers. Over 10,000 people were displaced from villages inundated under rainwater. Heavy rain caused the inundation of the low-lying areas in Tando Jam where buffaloes drowned up to their necks under accumulated rainwater. Hyderabad, which has been submerged in rainwater for several days now received 101 millimetres of more rain during the last 24 hours.
The water from the nearby canals deluged the localities in Nawabshah, leaving residents trapped in their houses. The Nawabshah airport has also been closed owing to heavy downpours.
The situation in Kandiaro is also bad. The breach in the Pano Aqil canal has widened to 300 feet, leaving over 400 houses affected and deluging thousands of acres of land.
In Sukkur, the roof of a portion of the Deputy Commissioner's office caved in. Several streets, roads and localities are still inundated under rainwater even after a week. Boats are being used for commute.
Water could not be drained from markets and commercial areas in the city.
Heavy downpours that lashed Dadu for at least 21 hours submerged everything under rainwater in the city.
The water level rose due to constant showers at Zero Point in the Badin district, allowing the water of the canal to pass over the bridge.
In Thatta also, rains have impacted the daily life and animals. Even the government buildings have been affected owing to the rains.
Sindh sets up relief fund
Amid a dire need to help flood-hit people, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, in a televised message, urged philanthropists to come out and help the affected people of the province which is “enduring a catastrophe like never before.” Sindh government has announced the Sindh Flood Relief Fund for affectees of the ongoing torrential rains and flooding in the province, a notification issued by the provincial finance department read. The fund has been initiated to seek financial support for victims in the province hit hard by extreme weather patterns. Donations for the fund will also be made through net monthly salaries of ministers including Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah, PPP's provincial assembly members, advisors, CM's special assistants, Parliamentary secretaries, officers, and officials. “We are trying to arrange tents, mosquito nets, beds, edibles, medicines, and other items for affectees,” he said, ensuring the provision of all essential items within a few days. "Philanthropists, welfare organisations, and donor agencies should visit Sindh to assess the situation and provide support to distressed people," he said, also requesting affluent citizens to come forward to support victims.

Sindh announces closure of schools, seeks Army's help in view of heavy rain forecast

Above-normal rain in Sindh, which has flooded hundreds of villages and low-lying areas in cities and towns across the province, has disrupted routine life and led to the deaths of hundreds.
In view of the misery caused by the rains and the latest Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) advisory, the Government of Sindh on Tuesday announced the closure of schools and colleges across the province for two days.
The move followed the Board of Intermediate Education (BIEK), Karachi, announcing the postponement of exams scheduled for August 24 and 25.
Rain affects 1.9 million people in Sindh
A report released by the PDMA has noted that more than 1.9 million people in Sindh have been adversely affected due to heavy rainfall.
It said that 263 deaths were reported in Sindh, including 120 children and 35 women and 30,150 cattle died in rain-related accidents.
Meanwhile, a total of 701 injuries were reported across Sindh, including 144 children. The PDMA also said that approximately 104,000 houses were completely destroyed while the infrastructure of 225,677 houses was damaged.
Army comes to rescue
Amid country-wide flooding, Pakistan Army troops are busy in rescue and relief operations in flood-hit areas of Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab. According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), rescue and relief efforts are underway in Hyderabad, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, Jamshoro, Noshero Feroz and various other districts of Sindh. Special army helicopters were flown from Karachi to affected areas of interior Sindh to speed up rescue and relief efforts. Food supplies are being distributed in affected areas and medical aid is also being provided to the affected people. In Punjab, Pakistan Army helicopters have assisted civil administration in the distribution of relief goods for flood-hit people in far-flung and inaccessible areas of DG Khan district. FC KP troops are also assisting civil administration in flood relief operations in Chitral and other flood-hit areas.
PMD forecasts more rains
The PMD released an advisory earlier in the day forecasting more rains in the country during the week. The Met Office said that a well-marked low pressure located over east Rajasthan, India, is likely to move in the northwest direction and approach Sindh tonight. “Due to this strong weather system monsoon currents are penetrating in southern and upper parts of the country,” the PMD warned. Under the influence of this weather system:
- More rain-wind/thundershowers (with scattered heavy to very heavy falls) are expected in Sindh, south Punjab, south and northeastern Balochistan from August 23-26 with occasional gaps
- Rain-wind/thundershowers (with isolated heavy falls) are expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan from August 23 (night) to 26 with occasional gaps
Moreover, heavy rains may generate urban flooding in Karachi, Hyderabad, Tando Jam, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Khairpur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu, Naushahro Feroz, Larkana, Jaccobabad and Sukkur on August 24 and 25

Watch cloudburst over Jamshoro as Sindh receives highest ever rainfall in 24 hours
JAMSHORO: Cloudburst hovered above Jamshoro on Friday as the city witnessed record downpour at 355mm.
Climate Change Minister Senator Sherry Rehman took to her Twitter to share the video, claiming that this was the heaviest ever rainfall recorded across Sindh in one day.
In a time-lapse video, which has now gone viral on social media, cloudburst appear drenching the city and setting a new record for heavy downpour in the span of 24 hours. The last heaviest rainfall recorded in Jamshoro within 24 hours was at 238mm on August 31, 2011.
“Today on 19 Aug 2022 we recorded the heaviest rainfall ever in one day all over Sindh,” she tweeted, crediting the Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) for the video.
The minister deemed the cloudburst over Jamshoro “unprecedented” and mentioned how many areas witnessed non-stop rain for three days.
PMD predicts more rainfall
Earlier today, PMD predicted more rainfall across the country including warnings of flash flooding, particularly in Sindh and Balochistan, between August 19 and 24.
The Met department also advised authorities to remain alert in case of emergencies following the extreme weather.
On August 23 and 24, rainfall with wind and thundershowers is expected to drench Sindh, south Punjab, south and northeastern Balochistan.
PMD warned that urban flooding may affect Sukkur, Dadu, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Shaheed Benazirabad on August 19 and 20.
On the other hand, Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu and Sukkur could also be impacted with urban flooding on August 23 and 24.
Met department shared that low pressure area over upper Sindh is likely to weaken during the next 12 hours, while another low pressure area is likely to approach Sindh from August 23.
“Due to this weather system, monsoon currents are penetrating in upper and southern parts of the country,” a press statement by Met read.

KARACHI: All government and private schools across Sindh will remain closed on Thursday (August 18) amid warnings of heavy rainfall.
The announcement was made by the Sindh Education Minister Sardar Ali Shah late Wednesday evening.
The minister said that Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has instructed the department to announce a holiday for schools.
Earlier, several private educational institutions had already announced that they would remain closed on August 18 amid the deteriorating situation of the city's roads due to the rains.
Moreover, Mehran University and Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Campus Khairpur will also remain closed tomorrow.
The Board of Intermediate Education (BIEK), Karachi, also postponed the exams scheduled for Thursday (August 18) in light of the rains in the metropolis.
It should be noted that several areas of Karachi reported heavy rain today afternoon as citizens brace themselves for more rain forecast in the port city till August 19.

Sindh schools to remain closed on Thursday
KARACHI: Chief Minister (CM) Sindh Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday announced closure of all educational institutions in Sindh amid heavy rainfall in most parts of the province.
The CM has issued directives to the department of education following the decision.
BIEK postpones exams
Earlier, the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) also postponed its annual examinations scheduled on August 18.
As per notification issued by the BIEK, papers of Arts (regular and private) and practicals (Science group) for the HSC annual examination-2022 have been rescheduled.
Predictions of heavy rainfallEarlier today, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) told authorities to remain on high alert in its latest forecast on the torrential monsoon rains and urban flooding in Sindh and Balochistan.
In the latest weather advisory, PMD stated that a monsoon low-pressure area persists over eastern Sindh and adjoining west Rajasthan (India).
The Met department said that widespread rain-thunderstorms with scattered heavy/very heavy falls — extremely heavy at times — and accompanied by occasional strong winds are likely to occur in Shaheed Benazirabad, Naushero Feroze, Khairpur, Sukkur, and Larkana till 19 August.
Rains in Karachi and across the country have killed over 600 people since the beginning of this year's monsoon season, with Balochistan being affected the most as more than 180 citizens have lost their lives in rain and flood-related incidents.

Sindh Wildlife rescues stray Indus Dolphin from Rohri Canal
ROHRI: The Sindh Wildlife Department on Tuesday rescued a rare Indus dolphin from the Rohri Canal that strayed into the waters from Sukkur Barrage.
The dolphin reached the Rohri Canal in Khairpur.
The rescue mission was completed by 25 professional divers, which recovered the dolphin after a 4-hour-long operation.
Indus dolphins are mostly at a risk of being caught in nets and regulator gates. According to a 2019 survey, there are around 1,419 dolphins in the Indus River.
This species of dolphin resides within murky waters between the Guddu and Sukkur Barrage.
The in charge of Sindh Wildlife’s rescue team Adnan Hamid said that the rescued dolphin was safely released near the Tomb of Seven Sisters located on the Indus River’s left bank near Rohri.

MQM Pakistan angry again, demands federal and Sindh govt to revise policy
KARACHI: MQM-P on Sunday has expressed fury toward the federal and Sindh government again.
Speaking during a press conference, MQM’s deputy convener Wasim Akhtar has asked the federal and provincial governments of Sindh to revise the policy.
He said that the party’s Rabita Committee is gravely concerned about the lack of implementation of the agreements signed with coalition parties before the vote of no-confidence.
“The committee will announce its next action plan,” he emphasised.
The former Karachi mayor added that efforts are being made to divide MQM’s vote bank by forming "fake political parties".
“Agreements are signed with MQM, which aren’t upheld later,” he said.
It should be noted that MQM is part of the coalition government in the federation, which includes other political parties such as PML-N, PPP, and JUI.

Monsoon system to enter Sindh today
KARACHI: As the city continues to reel from the shocks of the previous rain spells, another monsoon system is expected to enter Sindh today, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The PMD, in an advisory, said that monsoon currents of moderate intensity are likely to enter eastern Sindh from August 5.
Under the influence of this weather system, the advisory added, rain-thunderstorms with a few moderate and isolated heavy falls are expected in Tharparker, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Tando Muhammad khan, Tando Allayar, Hyderabad, Matiari, Thatta, Sujawal, Sanghar, Shaheed Benazirabad, Khairpur, Sukkur, Larkana, Ghotki, Kashmore, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Dadu, Jamshoro and Qambar Shahdadkot districts between August 5 and 9.
In Karachi, however, it will cause rain between August 6 and 9.
The heavy rain may cause water-logging in low-lying areas of Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allayar, Dadu, Jamshoro and Qambar Shahdadkot districts during the forecast period.
As per the PMD, another monsoon is expected after August 10, causing more rains in Karachi.
