A Missouri man who stole $218,000 during an identity theft scam spent the cash on gambling and drugs, authorities said.

Michael Worsham, 33, pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to two counts of wire fraud, seven counts of bank fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft, the Justice Department said.  His illegal activities ran from October 2019 to November 2021, a period in which he took out multiple bank loans in the names of victims and stole checks that he then cashed, federal authorities said.  MY HUSBAND CAPT. Worsham admitted to investigators to using the money to purchase a 2015 Ford Mustang, a black Chevy Avalanche and a 2021 Suzuki motorcycle. He also paid a friend to use a stolen identity to buy a 2021 Honda motorcycle. He unsuccessfully tried to buy a $17,841 Ford Mustang GT, federal prosecutors said.  In July 2021, he allegedly deposited four checks that were altered for a total of more than $50,000 and opened an account in the name of a business and deposited two checks totaling more than $32,000, according to the DOJ.  In June 2021, Worsham told Missouri police officers he used stolen identities that he purchased online to take out loans. Authorities estimate he committed $200,000 in fraudulent activity.  He faces up to 30 years in prison and fines of up to $1 million. He is slated to be sentenced in November.

Sean Hannity: There were two main attempts by the FBI and the DOJ to destroy Donald Trump

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Sean Hannity discussed how the DOJ and The FBI have made two main efforts to bring down former President Trump on "Hannity."

SEAN HANNITY: WE'RE NOW FULLY IMMERSED IN YET ANOTHER ANTI-TRUMP WITCH HUNT

SEAN HANNITY: We begin with a text from August the eighth, 2016. Why do we stop here? Stay with us. At the time, top FBI lawyer Lisa Page – absolutely distraught. She was terrified at the prospect that Donald Trump would be elected president. She texted her colleague and lover. Top FBI investigator Peter Strzok quoting, quote, Trump's not ever going to become president. Right.

Struck responded, no, he's not. We'll stop it. Then a week later, Struck texted, quote, I believe that the path that you throw out for consideration in Andy's office, we assume, Andy McCabe, that there is no way he gets elected. But I'm afraid we can't take that risk. So like an insurance policy in the unlikely event you die before you're 40, so they had an insurance policy and they wanted to stop Donald Trump from ever becoming president, and they had a plan to do so in the weeks and months that followed.

Southern Baptist Convention says it's under DOJ investigation

The Southern Baptist Convention announced Friday it is under investigation by the Department of Justice following the release of a 288-page report that found that the denomination's top leaders ignored sexual abuse allegations and disparaged survivors for more than two decades.

"Individually and collectively each SBC entity is resolved to fully and completely cooperate with the investigation," a statement from organization leaders read.

It continued, "While we continue to grieve and lament past mistakes related to sexual abuse, current leades across the SBC have demonstrated a firm conviction to address those issues of the past and are implementing measures to ensure they are never repeated in the future."

The report released in May was conducted by Guidepost Solutions, an independent firm contracted by the Southern Baptist Convention's Executive Committee. It found that survivors and concerned Southern Baptists continuously shared allegations with the executive committee.

The report found that those who came forward were "met, time and time again, with resistance, stonewalling, and even outright hostility from some within the EC."

The report also found that SBC leaders were concerned about church liability and its reputation and ignored concerns "even if it meant that convicted molesters continued in ministry with no notice or warning to their current church or congregation."

In a May interview with "ABC News Live," then-president of the Southern Baptist Convention Ed Litton said the damning independent investigative report on sex abuse allegations was "overdue."

"The rumors were always out there that these things were happening," Litton said on "ABC News Live." "There were several attempts made at our convention meetings to bring this to light. But they were very successfully pushed down."

Sexual abuse in Southern Baptist churches was spotlighted in 2019 by the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News in a report that documented hundreds of cases. Several of the accused perpetrators remained in ministry.

The investigation from local journalists led to thousands of delegates voting to create a task force charged with overseeing a third-party review of the denomination's leaders.

DOJ launches environmental justice investigation in Houston over dumping

Comment

The Justice Department on Friday opened an environmental justice investigation into allegations that the city of Houston has failed to respond equitably to reports of illegal dumping in predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods.

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke, who heads the civil rights division, said the probe will focus primarily on the northeast section of the nation’s fourth-largest city, including the neighborhoods of Trinity and Houston Gardens. Residents in those communities have voiced long-standing concerns over the dumping of furniture, tires, medical waste, automated bank teller machines, dead animals and even human bodies, officials said.

Since his appointment last year as the nation’s top law enforcement official, Attorney General Merrick Garland has sought to prioritize issues of environmental justice, announcing the creation in May of a Justice Department office to help coordinate the federal government’s legal strategy. The Houston case, officials said, was prompted by a 65-page complaint from Lone Star Legal Aid, which alleged that the city has denied services and failed to enforce municipal codes in some neighborhoods.

“The complaint we received indicates the issues extend back years,” Clarke said. “It’s deeply troubling to see the reports of the items regularly dumped and abandoned in Black and Latino communities.”

Justice officials said investigators have requested data from Houston’s 311 city services center to determine whether there has been a pattern of neglect of calls from certain sections of the city. The probe will focus on the city’s Department of Neighborhoods, the police department and the solid waste management division, all of which receive federal funding.

Under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, jurisdictions that receive federal funding are barred from discriminating on the basis of race, color or national origin.

Clarke said illegal dumping can disadvantage neighborhoods in multiple ways, including by attracting rodents and mosquitoes, lowering property values, causing illness, obstructing sewer drainage and contaminating drinking water.

“In America, your Zip code often is a key determinant of your cancer risk … and even your expected life span,” said Todd S. Kim, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s environment and natural resources division. “It’s true that any of us could be exposed to environmental contamination, but it’s also true that communities of color, low-income communities and tribal communities bear these hardships disproportionately.”

Clarke said the Justice Department would seek to work collaboratively with Houston officials to develop a voluntary compliance plan to address any violations uncovered in the investigation.
