Rapper stabbed to death as London's Notting Hill Carnival returns

London’s Notting Hill Carnival was marred by the murder of a young rapper and hundreds of arrests, police said on Tuesday. Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv The 21-year-old man died after being stabbed on Monday, the latest in a wave of knife-crime incidents in the British capital this year that have sparked growing concern. The victim was later identified as a rapper from Bristol, western England, who performed under the name TKorStretch. “He came from Bristol to simply have a good time at the London carnival and this is the end result,” his manager Chris Patrick wrote on Instagram.

“TK was a good kid, a good guy and what has happened breaks my heart,” he added. London’s Metropolitan Police said officers were called at about 8:00 pm (1900 GMT) on Monday, the final day of the carnival, to reports of a stabbing in Ladbroke Grove and administered emergency first aid. “He was taken to a west London hospital where, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead,” the force added. London mayor Sadiq Khan said he was “sickened” by the stabbing. “Violence has no place on our streets and we are doing everything in our power to root it out,” he added. Related – After Sidhu Moosewala, another rapper shot dead after his show London police recorded 11,122 knife-crime offences in the year until March 2022, a 9.8 percent increase compared to last year, according to official figures. At the carnival, officers made 209 arrests, including 46 for assault, 33 for possession of an offensive weapon and eight sexual assaults, said the force. Alison Heydari, Commander of Local Policing, said early on Tuesday that “the atmosphere over the past two days has been largely positive” but that on Monday evening “we saw a number of violent incidents”. The Notting Hill Carnival — one of the world’s largest street festivals — was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The three-day celebration of British-Caribbean culture traces its roots back the 1950s after the first surge in arrivals from former British colonies post-World War II. Feathered dancers, steel bands and earth-shaking sound systems feature in the vibrant celebration held over the August bank holiday weekend.

Shaky calm returns as death toll from Libya clashes mounts

Rival factions battle across capital Tripoli, leaving 23 people dead and damaging six hospitals, as UN-backed Dbeibah government condemns "war crimes" by rival administration led by Fathi Bashagha.

Clashes between backers of Libya's rival sides have killed at least 23 people and damaged six hospitals in Tripoli, sparking fears that a political crisis could spiral into a major new armed conflict. Small arms fire and explosions rocked several districts of the capital overnight and into Saturday when smoke could be seen rising from damaged buildings. But cautious calm appeared to have returned on Saturday night, the AFP news agency correspondent said. UN-backed Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah in the capital Tripoli posted a video of himself surrounded by bodyguards and greeting fighters supporting him. In an updated toll, the Health Ministry said 23 people had been killed and 140 wounded in the fighting. Six hospitals were hit and ambulances were unable to reach areas affected by the clashes, the ministry had said earlier, condemning "war crimes". Fighting after talks fail The Government of National Unity (GNU) of Dbeibah said fighting had broken out after negotiations to avoid bloodshed in the western city collapsed. Dbeibah's government, formed as part of a United Nations-led peace process following a previous round of violence, is challenged by a rival administration led by former interior minister Fathi Bashagha. Bashagha, who is backed by eastern-based warlord Khalifa Haftar, says the GNU's mandate has expired. But he has so far been unable to take office in Tripoli, as Dbeibah has insisted on only handing power to an elected government. Dbeibah's government accused Bashagha of "carrying out his threats" to seize Tripoli by force. In July, clashes between rival groups in Tripoli left 16 people dead, including a child. Saturday's was the deadliest violence to hit the Libyan capital since Haftar's ill-fated attempt to seize it by force in 2019 and 2020. Source: AFP

Ex-emperor's heart returns to Brazil for bicentennial event

President Jair Bolsonaro welcomes embalmed heart of Pedro I, who declared Brazil's independence in 1822, for ceremonies, but critics say the far-right leader is playing "politics with bicentennial".

The embalmed heart of the emperor who declared Brazil's independence has returned to the South American nation for ceremonies worthy of a head of state as the country prepares to celebrate its bicentennial. The heart of Pedro I, contained in a golden reliquary, arrived from Portugal on Monday in a Brazilian air force plane. It was carried up the ramp of the presidential palace in Brasilia on Tuesday afternoon — in line with procedures afforded to visit leaders on official state visits. President Jair Bolsonaro welcomed the reliquary as cannon fired a salute in Brazil's capital. Cabinet ministers and first lady Michelle Bolsonaro also attended a quick ceremony in honour of Brazil's bicentennial. Brazilians will be able to view the reliquary in a Foreign Ministry building. Pedro I declared Brazil's independence in 1822 and imperial rule lasted until 1889 when the monarchy gave way to a republic.  He died 187 years ago and, per his will, his heart was transported to the Portuguese city of Porto, where it is kept in a glass vase with formaldehyde at the Church of Our Lady of Lapa. He is known in Portugal as Pedro IV.

Bolsonaro playing 'politics with bicentennial' Lawmaker Luiz Philippe de Orleans e Braganca, a member of Brazil’s former royal family and a staunch supporter of Bolsonaro, said the idea to bring the emperor's heart came from one of the president's informal advisers. "We lost a little of our reference of Brazil’s founders, what they represented, what they thought, what they hoped for Brazil. It is very important to bring some of that back," Braganca said in an interview with radio station Jovem Pan on Monday. Bringing the heart to Brazil "was a demand of a part of our society, which wants a historical redemption." Some Brazilians who seek to honour the monarchy's legacy are allied with Bolsonaro, who is running for reelection.  His critics have said that bringing Pedro I's heart to Brazil represents a nod to such people and is an example of the president playing politics with the bicentennial.  He has repeatedly called for his supporters to flood the streets for Independence Day on September 7, and political analysts have expressed concern about possible violence. "The coming of Peter I's heart to Brazil will be an opportunity for the Brazilian people to pay a tribute to a central figure of Brazil's independence process," Brazil's Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The statement said the heart will be returned to Portugal on September 8. The government didn't disclose how much the transportation of the heart cost public coffers. Brazil's struggle for independence was unlike the bloody affairs of other Latin American nations.  While there was some fighting, mostly it was resolved through the mediation of other nations and Brazil's payment of reparations to Portugal. The European nation finally recognised Brazilian statehood in 1825. Source: AP

Tim Paine returns to training, first-class comeback with Tasmania a possibility

Tim Paine could be back playing in Tasmania in six weeks as Australia's former Test captain prepares for his cricket comeback.
Paine is training with Tasmania's state squad as an uncontracted player as he plots a return for the first time since losing the Test captaincy in a text message controversy.

The 37-year-old took time away from the sport after standing down as Test skipper in November last year. Paine never retired but wasn't contracted on Tasmania's playing roster for this summer.

Cricket Tasmania say Paine is back in training. Tasmania's first outing this summer is a one-dayer on September 28 against South Australia but Paine is aiming to return in club ranks.

Cricket Tasmania's grade competition, the Premier League, starts in early October. Tasmania's opening Sheffield Shield game begins on October 6.

"We can confirm that Tim has returned to training with the aim at this stage to play in the CTPL this season," a Cricket Tasmania spokesperson said.

The governing body declined further comment but Paine has another powerful ally in fellow Tasmanian and ex-Test skipper Ricky Ponting. Ponting, recently appointed as head of strategy for Hobart Hurricanes, has openly stated his desire for Paine to again play for the BBL franchise.

Paine quit the Test captaincy after admitting involvement in a lewd text exchange with a female former employee of Cricket Tasmania in late 2017.

Cricket Australia secretly investigated at the time and exonerated Paine of wrongdoing, but he stepped down on the eve of last year's Ashes series when made aware the text exchange would become public.

Paine's successor as Test captain, Pat Cummins, said the wicketkeeper hasn't been forgotten.

"Someone like Painey, firstly as a mate you want to make sure he's okay. We all make mistakes," Cummins said last week. "He did the wrong thing but he tried to fix the situation as best as he could...I really feel for him."

India in Eng 2022 - Jhulan Goswami returns for ODI series

Goswami, 39, had missed the tour of Sri Lanka in July amid speculation about her international future. Rodrigues, meanwhile, was ruled out of the Hundred on the same day that the squad was named because of a wrist injury she sustained during the Commonwealth Games.
Kiran Prabhu Navgire, the batter from Maharashtra who plays for Nagaland, received her maiden call-up to India's T20I squad for the series that starts on September 10. Navgire, 27, grabbed eyeballs with her unbeaten 162 against Arunachal Pradesh in the Senior Women's T20 Trophy earlier this year. Hailing from Maharashtra, she represented Nagaland as a guest player and scored a chart-topping 525 runs, with 54 fours and 35 sixes. She also hit the fastest fifty in the Women's T20 Challenge in May while playing for Velocity.
Allrounder Dayalan Hemalatha, who played an ODI last year for the first time since February 2019, also found a place in both white-ball squads. She scored 272 runs for Railways in the 2021-22 domestic T20 tournament - the most for her side - and showed her all-round skills in the Senior Women's One-Day Trophy - taking eight wickets and making 67 runs in three innings at a strike-rate of 117.54 while batting in the lower-middle order.
While batter Harleen Deol was picked only in the ODI squad, legspinner Poonam Yadav, who was among the standbys for the Commonwealth Games, was not selected in either squad.
Meanwhile, the musical chairs for India's wicketkeeper slot continues with Richa Ghosh replacing Yastika Bhatia in the T20I setup. Taniya Bhatia continues to keep her spot across both white-ball formats.

India play three T20Is in England on September 10, 13 and 15, followed by three ODIs - part of the ICC Women's Championship - on September 18, 21 and 24.

T20I squad: Harmanpreet Kaur (capt), Smriti Mandhana (vc), Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, Pooja Vastrakar, Jemimah Rodrigues, Sneh Rana, Renuka Singh, Meghna Singh, Radha Yadav, S Meghana, Taniya Bhatia (wk), Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Dayalan Hemalatha, Simran Dil Bahadur, Richa Ghosh (wk), Kiran Prabhu Navgire

Zim vs Ind 2022 - Deepak Chahar returns for Zimbabwe ODIs, KL Rahul still unavailable

Deepak Chahar has made a comeback to the Indian team after nearly six months, during which he was being treated for a back injury, for the ODI series in Zimbabwe in August. Rahul Tripathi has received a maiden ODI call-up, while Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav have been included in the squad of 15 for the three-match series in Harare.
KL Rahul has not yet recovered sufficiently, after first undergoing a successful surgery for a sports hernia, and then suffering from a bout of Covid-19. Rahul took to his social media to say that his post-surgery recovery had put him on course for the white-ball games against West Indies, but the Covid infection has pushed his progress to full fitness back by a couple of weeks.
Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal, who were all part of the ODIs in the West Indies, have been left out. While there has been no official word on the selections, or non-selections, it is understood that the premier players are being rotated as part of the BCCI's policy keeping in mind the packed international calendar. India are currently playing a white-ball series in the West Indies, and the Asia Cup will start on August 27 in the UAE, just five days after the last ODI in Zimbabwe.
Chahar last played at any representative level in the T20I series at home against West Indies back in February. He picked up the back injury while undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where he was recovering from the quadricep tear he was diagnosed with during the West Indies games. He subsequently sat out the IPL, where he was Chennai Super Kings' biggest buy in the 2022 auction, as well as all the international cricket India have played since.
Kuldeep recently received the green signal from the NCA medical team after recovering from a hairline fracture in his right wrist, which had forced him out of the South Africa T20Is at home as well as the white-ball tours of Ireland and England. He is in the squad that is currently playing in the T20I series in the West Indies. Kuldeep last played in the IPL for Delhi Capitals, where he picked up 21 wickets in 14 matches.
Washington, who last played for India in the ODIs against West Indies, had recovered from a hand injury last month and, more recently, has been in action for Lancashire in the County Championship. He picked up a five-for in the first innings against Northamptonshire in his first county game, and followed it up with a match-winning knock of 34*. He has played one more match, against Kent, and took 3 for 24 in the second innings.

Tripathi had received his maiden India call-up in June for the T20Is against Ireland, but did not make the playing XI. While he has made a name for himself with his exploits in T20s, specifically in the IPL, Tripathi has a fairly good record in the 50-over format as well: in 43 List A games, he has 1209 runs at an average of 31.00. In the 2021 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he made 199 runs in five games at 49.75.

Shikhar Dhawan, who led India in the West Indies ODIs, will continue as captain for this series as well, with regular captain Rohit Sharma continuing to sit out. The likes of Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Shami have also been rested.

Singapore's GIC reports stable returns amid uncertainty over inflation

Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC reported stable returns for the year but warned of "profound uncertainties" as investors face worries about inflation, pandemic risks and geopolitical challenges.

The fund's portfolio recorded an annualized dollar nominal rate of return of 7% over a 20-year period ending March 31, 2022, GIC said in its annual report published on Wednesday.

It also achieved an annualized rolling 20-year real rate of return of 4.2 % for the period ending March 31, after stripping away inflation. GIC doesn't publish annual results.

Still GIC, which is among the world's largest investors, painted a rather bleak picture of the global environment.

"Years of concerns over deflation have turned into worries of elevated inflation, forcing economic policymakers to reverse stimulus policies," said Chief Executive Lim Chow Kiat in the report.

"At the same time, the clock for the climate crisis is ticking, pandemic risk lingers on, and geopolitical conflicts and domestic political schisms are growing. There are no easy choices for policymakers and business leaders, and in turn, for investors."
