Alaska Native Peltola beats Trump-backed Palin to win House election

Democrat Mary Peltola has won the special election for Alaska’s only US House seat, besting a field that included Republican Sarah Palin, who was seeking a political comeback in the state where she was once governor. Peltola, who is Yup'ik and turned 49 on Wednesday, will become the first Alaska Native to serve in the House and the first woman to hold the seat. She will serve the remaining months of the late Republican US Republican Don Young's term. Young held the seat for 49 years before his death in March.  Peltola's victory, in Alaska's first statewide ranked-choice voting election, is a boon for Democrats coming off better-than-expected performances in special elections around the country following the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v Wade.  She will be the first Democrat to hold the seat since the late US Republican Nick Begich, who was seeking reelection in 1972 when his plane disappeared.  Begich was later declared dead and Young in 1973 was elected to the seat. Peltola ran as a coalition builder while her two Republican opponents — Palin and Begich's grandson, also named Nick Begich — at times went after each other. Palin also railed against the ranked voting system, which was instituted by Alaska voters. The results came 15 days after the August 16 election, in line with the deadline for state elections officials to receive absentee ballots mailed from outside the US. Ranked choice tabulations took place on Wednesday after no candidate won more than 50 percent of the first choice votes.  Wednesday's results were a disappointment for Palin, who was looking to make a political comeback 14 years after she was vaulted onto the national stage when John McCain selected her to be his running mate in the 2008 presidential election. In her run for the House seat, she had widespread name recognition and won the endorsement of former president Donald Trump.
Peltola's 'regular Alaskan' campaign But critics questioned Palin's commitment to Alaska, citing her decision to resign as governor in July 2009, partway through her term. Palin went on to become a conservative commentator on TV and appeared in reality television programmes, among other pursuits. Along with Peltola and Begich, Palin is among the candidates vying for a full two-year term that will be decided in the November general election. Palin has insisted her commitment to Alaska never wavered and said ahead of the special election that she had “signed up for the long haul.” Peltola, a former state lawmaker who most recently worked for a commission whose goal is to rebuild salmon resources on the Kuskokwim River, cast herself as a "regular" Alaskan. "I’m not a millionaire. I’m not an international celebrity," she said. "I’m really hopeful that voters will feel like they can vote their heart and not feel pressured to vote for the candidate that they think is most 'viable,'" Peltola said before the special election. "And my hope is that we shy away from the really extreme-type candidates and politicians." During the campaign, she emphasised her support of abortion rights and said she wanted to elevate issues of ocean productivity and food security.  Explaining Alaska's new voting system Alaska voters in 2020 approved an election process that replaced party primaries with open primaries. Under the new system, ranked voting is used in general elections. Under ranked voting, ballots are counted in rounds. A candidate can win outright with more than 50 percent of the vote in the first round. If no one hits that threshold, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated.  Voters who chose that candidate as their top pick have their votes count for their next choice. Rounds continue until two candidates remain, and whoever has the most votes wins. In Alaska, voters last backed a Democrat for president in 1964.  Source: AP

Rep. Jerry Nadler will win the Democratic nomination for New York's 12th District

The final pieces of the midterm puzzle are coming into focus as Tuesday primaries in New York, Florida and Oklahoma lock in key parts of the November election slate.

Democrats in Florida on Tuesday picked Rep. Charlie Crist to take on Gov. Ron DeSantis in the fall, CNN projected. Crist's challenge comes as DeSantis seeks both a second term and a boost ahead of a rumored presidential bid in 2024. CNN also projected that Democratic Rep. Val Demings would take on Republican Sen. Marco Rubio in November.

Here are the some of the key takeaways so far:

Crist looks to derail DeSantis in the fall

For the second time in eight years, Democratic voters elected Crist as their nominee for governor, choosing the seasoned veteran over Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, who was vying to become the state's first female governor. Crist now has just 11 weeks to unite his party, energize the Democratic base and convince independent voters that the state needs a new direction.

The stakes for Democrats are high, and not just in Florida, where DeSantis has already pushed through an aggressively conservative agenda, vowing that a second term will bring new action to further restrict abortion and to make it easier to carry a gun in public. But national Democrats are also now looking for Crist to slow DeSantis' rise before an anticipated campaign for the White House in 2024.

Florida's latest contentious Senate race formally takes shape

The Senate race between Rubio and Demings is on.

Demings won her primary on Tuesday and Rubio was unopposed, setting up a race that Republicans believe they should easily win but one that offers Democrats yet another chance to show they can win statewide in a place that has crept right for years.

The two have been focused on each other for months — their primaries were not competitive — but on Tuesday night, the contours of the race were clear: Rubio plans to brand Demings a "Pelosi Puppet" who is inextricably linked to President Joe Biden, while Demings plans to attack Rubio as ineffective, selfish and wedded to a Republican Party dominated by Trump.

Read more takeaways.

Sailor duel and Esteghlal with the presence of 2 big mascots; It has been several years without a win

According to IRNA, after losing in the first week of the 22nd season of the Iranian Premier League, Esteghlal Tehran football team will have to face their host Melvan Bandar Anzali in the second week. The match will be played at Takhti Anzali Stadium on Thursday at 19:30.

Led by Ricardo Sapinto, Tehrani blue-coats are looking to make up for the loss of the first week. On the other hand, Maziar Zare and his students have the same goal. In the first step, they lost to their hosts with one goal, and now they have a good chance to make up for it at home.

These two teams have faced each other 28 times in the history of the Premier League, the result of which was 14 wins for the capital team, four victories for Anzlichi and 10 draws. They have not lined up against each other in these competitions after the fall of Melwan in the 15th league, and it remains to be seen what the result of the conflict between these two teams will be after 6 seasons of absence.

In the first leg of the 15th League, Esteghlal passed the Melvan barrier with 2 goals by Omid Ebrahimi, but in the second leg, hosted by the representative of Gilan province, a 2-2 draw prevailed. In that meeting, Jaber Ansari and Mohsen Karimi scored for Esteghlal, and on the other hand, Seyed Jalal Rafkhai scored both goals for White Swans.

Tehrani blue-coats have always faced serious challenges in Anzali. They have not won in the last five meetings with Selvan at home and in the Premier League, and they have won 2 draws and 3 losses. The last victory of the capital team in the Takhti Stadium and in the Premier League dates back to 11 years, eight months and 20 days ago, or in other words, 4281 days ago. where they overcame their 10-man opponent with Hanif Omranzadeh's single goal. It has to be seen whether this spell will be broken in the second week of the 22nd league or not.

The sailors, on the other side of the story, have to break the spell. They have not won their last three games in the 15th league and failed to score in the first week of the season as they look for their first win in 2309 days in the Premier League. Their last win was against a Tehrani team in Anzali. Where the White Swans beat Saipa in the 27th week of the 15th League with a score of 3-2.

It should be seen whether the spell will break this week or not.

Andre Russell says I want to win another World Cup for West Indies

Andre Russell has insisted he still wants to win "another World Cup - or two more - for West Indies" and that he still has ambitions to play international cricket.
Russell has not played for West Indies since the T20 World Cup in November 2021. Last week, he responded to head coach Phil Simmons' suggestions that he should not be "begging" players to make themselves available for international cricket, writing "I know this was coming but am gonna stay quiet!!!" with four 'angry' emojis in a since-deleted Instagram post.

Russell, who is currently in England playing for Manchester Originals in the Hundred, was asked about his situation by Daren Sammy, the former West Indies captain, during Sky Sports' build-up to their game against Welsh Fire on Tuesday night.

"I'm going to be quiet," Russell said, "because at the end of the day, we had a discussion, and the discussion was very clear. So now, making me look bad, throwing me under the bus… I was expecting it. I'm going to stay quiet, Daren, to be honest."

But Russell did respond when Sammy asked if he still wanted to play for West Indies, saying: "Of course, of course. The maroon is all over.

"Honestly, I have two franchise hundreds and I wish those hundreds were actually playing for West Indies. I don't regret saying this just now. I really enjoyed playing for Jamaica Tallawahs but those two hundreds, it would be more special coming in international cricket.

"I always want to play and give back. But at the end of the day, if we are not agreeing on certain terms, you terms is my terms [sic], and they have to respect my terms as well. At the end of the day, it is what it is. We have families and we have to make sure that we give our best opportunity while we have one career.

"It's not like I can start over again. I'm 34 and I want to win another World Cup - or two more - for West Indies because at the end of the day, I'm here now, and I'm just taking it day by day."

Russell will leave the Hundred next week to play in the CPL for Trinbago Knight Riders, and Desmond Haynes, West Indies' lead selector, has suggested that performances in that tournament will be a major factor in World Cup selection. "If there is a competition that is run by the West Indies [and] somebody is playing well, I think his name should really come up for selection," he said last week.

US lawmakers pass massive climate, health bill in big win for Biden

Democratic-led House of Representatives approves $430 billion bill that is seen as biggest climate package in US history, delivering a major legislative victory for President Biden ahead of November 8 midterm elections.

US lawmakers have adopted President Joe Biden's sprawling climate, tax and health care plan –– a major win for the veteran Democrat that includes the biggest ever American investment in the battle against global warming.

The House of Representatives on Friday approved the measure by a 220-207 vote along party lines following its adoption in the Senate on Sunday by a razor-thin margin, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote.

The legislation to fight the climate crisis and lower prescription drug prices aim to cut domestic greenhouse gas emissions.

It will also allow Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices for the elderly and ensure that corporations and the wealthy pay the taxes they owe.

Democrats say it will help combat inflation by reducing the federal deficit.

Democrats hope the legislation will help them at the polls in November, when voters decide the balance of power in Congress ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

Republicans are favoured to win a majority in the House and could also take control of the Senate.

Biden quickly hailed the adoption of his plan, which includes a $370 billion investment aimed at bringing about a 40 percent drop in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

"Today, the American people won. Special interests lost," the president tweeted in the minutes after the vote.

Republicans say 'it will kill jobs'

The bill's main revenue source is a 15 percent corporate minimum tax aimed at stopping large, profitable companies from gaming the Internal Revenue Service code to slash their tax bills to zero, which has led to mixed reactions from business groups to the legislation.

Republicans oppose the legislation, warning it will kill jobs by raising corporate tax bills, further fuel inflation with government spending and inhibit the development of new drugs.

"Democrats more than any other majority in history are addicted to spending other people's money, regardless of what we as a country can afford," House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said in a floor speech.

But the bill does not leave the US fossil fuels industry out in the cold.

Some provisions allow the federal government to authorise new wind and solar energy developments on federal land only when it is also auctioning rights to drill for oil and natural gas.

The fossil fuel protections disappointed progressives but posed no barrier to Democratic support.

About half of Americans support the climate and drug pricing legislation, including 69 percent of Democrats and 34 percent of Republicans, according to a Reuters news agency/Ipsos poll conducted on August 3 and 4.

Ashleigh Buhai makes history at Muirfield, becomes first SA woman since Sally Little to win a major

South Africa's Ashleigh Buhai survived a disastrous 15th hole to claim a "life-changing" victory in a marathon playoff against Chun In-gee in the Women's Open at Muirfield on Sunday.

Both players tied on 10 under par after 72 holes, and, in near total darkness, it was Buhai who eventually secured the final major of the season with a par four at the fourth extra hole, the 18th.

Chun bunkered her drive and took five, while Buhai got up and down from a greenside bunker, holing out from two feet for victory.

Buhai made history by becoming only the third South African woman to win a major golf championship.

Golf Hall of famer Sally Little won the Women's PGA Championship in 1980 and the 1988 Du Maurier Classic, which was a women's major from 1979 until 2000. Alison Sheard also won the Women's Open in 1979 at Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club.

Buhai was close to tears as husband David rushed onto the green and gave her a kiss and a loving hug.

"It's been a lot of hard work over many years," said the 33-year-old, who won the first of three South African Amateur titles when she was just 14.

Her professional career has never quite hit the same heights with three wins in Europe and two South African Opens. But she had never won an LPGA title until now, and a major at that to make it even more special.

Five ahead overnight, she had to survive a triple-bogey seven at the 15th - that dragged her back into a tie with Chun - before snatching the dramatic playoff win.

"I'm very proud of myself," she continued. "I had to dig deep. But I was surprisingly calm in the play-off. Just tried to stay in the moment.

"Before I hit the bunker shot in the play-off, my caddie (Tanya Paterson) said 'show them why you are ranked No.1 in bunkers this year'. It was great to do it."

Gary Player (1959) and Ernie Els (2002), Buhai's hero growing up, are South African winners of the Open Championship at Muirfield.

Magnanimous Chun

"I am so proud to join them as major winners at Muirfield," Buhai continued.

"It really is going to be life-changing."

Chun was magnanimous in defeat.

The winner of three majors, including this year's Women's PGA Championship, said: "I never gave up, and gave it may all."

The 27-year-old Korean added: "Ashleigh played a brilliant bunker shot and she deserved it. I am very happy for her."

Buhai had looked in total control when she led by three shots with just four to play.

But she drove into a bunker at the 15th, hit out sideways into rough and then moved the ball just a few yards with her third shot on the way to a triple-bogey seven.

Now tied for the lead, she did well to par the final three holes for a 75 that matched Chun's 10-under par total. The Korean closed with a round of 70.

Japan's Hinako Shibuno, the 2019 winner, finished third on nine under after a final round 71.

American teenager Rose Zhang won the Smyth Salver for the leading amateur. She closed with a 73 for one over par.

Buhai's victory was also South Africa's first major - men and women - since Ernie Els' 2012 Open win at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

The two other South Africans in the field made the cut: Paula Reto finished tied for 58th and Lee-Ann Pace ended 65th.

Australia news - 'He could actually win you a World Cup'

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes Tim David is the type of player that could win Australia the T20 World Cup, comparing his match-winning ability to that of 2003 50-over World Cup star Andrew Symonds.
Ponting, who has recently taken a role as Hobart Hurricanes head of strategy where David plays in the BBL, suggested that if he was an Australia selector he would find a place for the powerful right-hander in Australia's side despite the fact the 2022 T20 World Cup hosts are defending a title they won without David in the squad last year.
He compared David's power-hitting to that of his late friend Symonds, who was a last-minute inclusion in Australia's 2003 World Cup squad and dominated scoring a brilliant 143 not out in the opening game against Pakistan and another match-winning 91 not out in the semi-final against Sri Lanka.

"If I was a selector, I would love to have someone like that in my team," Ponting said. "If he's playing or not, just to have that sort of striking power ability around, he's an out and out match-winner.

"He's the sort of player that could actually win you a World Cup. He's not just the average run-of-the-mill guy that might just sneak into a squad. I mean, he actually reminds me a bit of someone like an Andrew Symonds back in the 2003 World Cup. You know if you get them in and you give him an opportunity they're a chance of winning a tournament for you. That's how I'd be looking at him right now. I know there are some other great world-quality players in the middle order for Australia. But probably none of them boasts the resume as good as Tim's over the last two years."

Australia's selection panel, which features George Bailey (chairman), Andrew McDonald (coach) and Tony Dodemaide, have a challenge on their hands trying to fit David into the 15-man squad. They did not pick him for the T20I tour of Sri Lanka as the squad was selected just prior to his outstanding run of form in the IPL. Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade have established themselves as Australia's finishers at No.6 and No.7 following their World Cup heroics last year. The top four is also settled. The only vulnerable player in that line-up appears to be Steven Smith who has been backed in at No.5 in Australia's T20I team with the selectors holding faith that the veteran will stand up when required in the T20 World Cup.
Skipper Aaron Finch suggested recently that David's opportunity with Australia will come. Australia's next T20I assignment is a three-game series against India in India in September. It is possible David could be part of that squad if a couple of Australia's multi-format batters are rested given the matches will be in vastly different conditions to those that will be seen in the World Cup. But those games are likely to be played after the 15-man World Cup squad has already been named.
Ponting saw David in the IPL at close quarters when he smacked 34 off 11 balls for Mumbai Indians against the Ponting-coached Delhi Capitals to knock Delhi out of the playoffs.
Ponting felt David was underutilised by Mumbai and is already planning to use him more prominently for Hobart Hurricanes following discussions with new coach Jeff Vaughan.

"He's been incredible in almost every tournament that he's played around the world, the last 12 or 18 months," Ponting said. "He was probably a little bit unlucky not to play more in the IPL this year to be honest, with the way that he started with Mumbai and then didn't come back until right near the end and played some match-winning knocks then.

"He's obviously one player that we're extremely excited about. I think there's a chance for him to probably take on a bit more responsibility in the batting line-up with the Hurricanes this season as well because of his consistency and his match-winning ability. We don't want to waste that and we don't have him sitting on the sidelines too long. So I know that's one of the strategic things that we've already spoken about with him, is how we actually get the most out of him and how we maximize his ability.

"He's a very, very good, very dangerous T20 player that I'm sure the Australian selectors are thinking long and hard about for the World Cup in a couple of months time."
