Climate activist Steven Spielberg's private jet has burned $116,000 worth of jet fuel in two months

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A private jet belonging to Steven Spielberg has burned more than $116,000 worth of jet fuel since June despite the famous Hollywood director's past warnings about global warming, according to a flight tracking database.

Spielberg's plane, a Gulfstream G650, has burned at least $116,159 worth of jet fuel over the course of 16 trips spanning nearly 17,000 miles since June 23, according to flight tracking data from ADS-B Exchange and compiled by the database Celebrity Jets. The figures are likely an underestimate since the database didn't calculate fuel and distance metrics of at least three trips made by Spielberg's jet. However, Spielberg has previously stated that global warming "terrified" him and ripped people who "go blithely through life" without caring about their impact on the environment. "I'm terrified of [global warming]," Spielberg remarked during a 2018 interview for his film Ready Player One. "Global warming is a scientific reality. It's not a political trick. It's a true piece of real, measurable, quantifiable science." JOHN KERRY'S FAMILY PRIVATE JET EMITTED OVER 300 METRIC TONS OF CARBON SINCE BIDEN TOOK OFFICE

"People have to come around to believing that this is — we are going to have to have a kind of confrontation with destiny unless we do something about it today," Spielberg said. He added that "everybody has to be held responsible" for their role in climate change. "You know when you're not mindful of something that could pose a danger to your children and grandchildren?" Spielberg remarked. "Then you just go blithely through life with aerosol cans and doing all sorts of things that are depleting the ozone." The plane then traveled to Rotterdam, Netherlands, before returning to Westhampton on July 1, burning another $24,685 worth of fuel and emitting an additional 38 tons of carbon.

The jet also made lengthy trips from Westhampton to Van Nuys, California, on July 11, from Westhampton to Knock, Ireland, on July 21 and from Teterboro, New Jersey, to Van Nuys on Aug. 4. The most recent trip recorded was a short flight on Thursday evening from Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, to Teterboro. Overall, Spielberg's jet has emitted at least 179 tons of carbon dioxide over the last two months. By comparison, the average American has an annual carbon footprint of 16 tons and the average global footprint is four tons per person. While the majority of the jet's trips and fuel usage were recorded, the database didn't calculate data for a few flights including two Thursday from Van Nuys to Chicago and from Chicago to Martha's Vineyard. Spielberg isn't the only Hollywood celebrity who has warned about global warming while taking private jets around the world. Fox News Digital reported last week that actor Leonardo DiCaprio went on multiple fossil fuel-powered trips over the last several years while pushing for extreme measures to combat climate change.

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio has taken several private jets on trips across the world in recent years, including flying from Europe to New York City to accept an environmental activism award in 2016.

He then returned to Europe for a charity event. That same year, DiCaprio took a private jet to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. At the summit, the WEF gave DiCaprio its Crystal Award for his "leadership in tackling the climate crisis."

A representative for Spielberg didn't respond to a request for comment.

Global water crisis activist runs 78th marathon in Istanbul

Australian runner Mina Guli aspires to convince 200 countries by the start of the UN World Conference in March 2023 to take concrete action to address the global water crisis.

“Every one of us has the power to work together to solve it. Individually, you can make an impact, but together, we can change the world,” activist Mina Guli said.

An Australian activist, who set out to run 200 marathons to draw attention to global water shortages that are increasing with climate change, has run her 78th marathon race in Istanbul. “We’re literally in the middle of a massive water problem of a water crisis around the world,” Guli said on Sunday about her “Run Blue” campaign to raise awareness about the water footprint. Starting her first marathon in her home country on March 22, World Water Day, Mina Guli, 52, set foot in the Turkish metropolis to start the European leg of her campaign after completing marathons in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa and Türkiye’s Lake Tuz (Salt Lake) in the central province of Konya. “Unfortunately, for most people it is hidden, but I’ve seen it and I want the world to see it, too,” she said. Guli pointed out that companies are responsible for almost 90 percent of the world’s water use, directly or indirectly, and she aspires to convince 200 countries to take concrete action or “Run Blue” by completing the marathons by the start of the UN World Conference in March 2023. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kqd6aFDNEQ[/embed] 'Failure isn't an option' Guli underlined that with accelerating climate change, the global water crisis requires urgent action. “We cannot hope anymore. Now we need to make things happen. We’re beyond the time of hope. We are into the time of opportunity for change because frankly, failure isn’t an option. We don’t have a planet B,” she said.  Two months earlier, Guli ran a marathon in the Aral Sea, the fourth largest lake in the world, 90 percent of which has dried up due to water that has not been replenished and increasing temperatures. WATCH: Scientists say Europe's drought will be worst in 500 years "I thought to myself for 30 years scientists told us that this lake would dry up and we just ignored them. People told us that Lake Urmia would dry up and we ignored them,” she continued. “Now people are telling us that the Salt Lake in the US is going to dry up and we're ignoring them, too. We see the rivers in Europe drying up. We see the lakes drying up. Lake Tuz has dried up because of climate change and also because of the diversion of the inbound rivers,” she said. “So we need to find a way to ensure that these warnings are not ignored anymore.” 2023 UN Water Conference Emphasising that the issue “has been swept under the rug or it's been forgotten about or deprioritised” for more than 50 years, Guli said the Water Conference “is a really great opportunity for us to use as a catalytic moment to drive change by governments, companies and all of us as individuals.” “We have an opportunity now over the next few months to show our leaders in government in the halls of power, in the boardrooms that we need them to do more." World facing true climate emergency, says climate activist

ANKARA

Extreme weather events like the deadly wildfires and flood-causing rains simultaneously gripping the world are signs of a looming climate emergency, according to a young environmentalist.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Indian climate activist Licypriya Kangujam warned of the increasing frequency and intensity of climate change-linked weather events and called on world leaders to take concrete steps on the matter.

"We want clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and a clean planet to live (on), so these all are basic rights for all of us," she said.

Defining the reduction of carbon emissions as "the biggest challenge" at the moment, Kangujam said another urgent issue was biodiversity loss related to climate change and that both must be tackled together as "many biodiversity hotspots become climate hotspots."

Pointing to the wildfires, droughts, floods, food shortages, cyclones, heat waves, and air pollution that are currently impacting different parts of the world, she underlined the need for "equal attention and climate justice."

"This is true climate emergency ... These are all the impacts of climate change and our world leaders need to act now as soon as possible" for vows on paper to become action to "save our planet and our future," said the 10-year-old activist who was also a leader of The Child Movement, a climate and child rights group.

While the world must shift to renewable energy to achieve a low-carbon future, she stressed, global events continue to make achieving this goal harder.

"Considering natural gas and nuclear as clean energy is unacceptable at any cost. We want to have clear transition to clean energy," Licypriya underlined, referring to the European Parliament's decision last month backing EU rules labeling investments in gas and nuclear power plants as climate-friendly.

On the move, she said Europe had taken the war in Ukraine as "an excuse" to increase their reliance on fossil fuels, rather than expand the capacity of renewable energy sources.

Simply more 'greenwashing'

The ongoing energy crisis is proof that Europe is fully dependent on fossil fuels and will not quit them easily in the next few decades despite ambitious plans under the Paris climate agreement, Licypriya stated.

Signed on Dec. 12, 2015, the accord sets out a global framework to avoid dangerous levels of climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2C and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5C. To achieve this, the Paris deal focuses on lowering greenhouse gas emissions through a system of pledge and review.

The EU wants to encourage private investment in natural gas and nuclear, making it "very difficult" to make the transition from fossil fuels, particularly coal, to clean energy, warned Licypriya, arguing that this amounted to simply another case of "greenwashing."

In response to a question on the main focus of an upcoming global climate strike on Sept. 23, the Indian activist pointed to the climate crisis of the global south.

"We will draw the attention to our world leaders and also to the global media to stop neglecting the voice of the global south when we suffer the most. We want a concrete climate solution now," she added.

On how climate activism has developed in recent times, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic, Licypriya highlighted that online climate activism had gained huge momentum during the lockdowns all over the world.

"In street demonstrations, we need physical presence which is difficult for everyone. Now, the participation in climate activism is in huge increase all over the world after the pandemic."

Transperson Forcibly Picked Up from Govt-supported Shelter, Beaten by Police, Alleges Activist

A livestream by an activist alleging that a transperson was forcibly picked up from a government-supported shelter home, harassed and brutally beaten by police personnel, has gone viral on social media even as the Delhi Police has rubbished the allegations. In the 10-min long livestream, Rudrani Chettri, a Delhi-based transgender activist alleged that police personnel from Dabri police station “forcibly picked” up a trans person, who hailed from Uttar Pradesh, from ‘Garima Greh’ late at night.

Garima Grehs are the shelter home for transgender persons supported by the ministry of social justice and empowerment to provide basic amenities like shelter, food, medical care and recreational facilities. “They forcibly made us open the gate of Garima Greh and picked up a transman from Uttar Pradesh. Those who went to ask for his whereabouts were beaten up. Our bridge course coordinator was also beaten up very badly. Police harassed them. We still are in hospital. They beat them because they are transgender,” she claimed. Further during the live stream, she turned the camera towards several injured people sitting in what appeared to be a hospital reception. Visibly injured Bella– bridge course coordinator– said police beat them unreasonably when they asked them about the whereabouts of the transman.

“They asked me to open the gate. When I opened the gate, four policemen and a woman constable went upstairs and asked us to bring one person as his parents have lodged his missing report. They informed that they want to take a statement from him and it is a matter of few hours before he will be brought back,” she recounted. “We agreed to let him go with them but we insisted on going with him. I along with three people went there. I saw they had already sent him in a car,” she said.

Bella also alleged that the policemen present there misbehaved with them and asked them to leave the area. “They also manhandled us. We kept asking them that we need in writing as it is against our guidelines, following which we will leave from here. Later, police attacked the guard and when we came in his rescue, they attacked us also in which we received injuries,” she alleged in the video. According to the police, at 12.20 am, a team of Uttar Pradesh Police from Badalpur police station, Gautam Budh Nagar came to Dabri police station and sought local assistance in a missing complaint lodged with them.

“They went to Garima Greh in Sitapuri and later left with the alleged victim in the missing complaint. Later, six to seven transgender persons came to the police station demanding to meet the person who had left with the UP Police team, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) M Harsha Vardhan said. They were told that the matter relates to UP Police and Dabri police station has just provided assistance, the DCP said.

“They became aggressive and obstructed police personnel on duty at the police station. Some of them also removed their clothes and started using very abusive language. Minimal force was used to disperse them,” Vardhan said, adding the police are sensitive to the concerns of transgender people. “I have asked my officers to engage them in constructive dialogue and make them understand that they should not take law into their hands. We are working with them to allay their cocnerns,” the DCP said.
