Rapper stabbed to death as London's Notting Hill Carnival returns

London’s Notting Hill Carnival was marred by the murder of a young rapper and hundreds of arrests, police said on Tuesday. Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv The 21-year-old man died after being stabbed on Monday, the latest in a wave of knife-crime incidents in the British capital this year that have sparked growing concern. The victim was later identified as a rapper from Bristol, western England, who performed under the name TKorStretch. “He came from Bristol to simply have a good time at the London carnival and this is the end result,” his manager Chris Patrick wrote on Instagram.

“TK was a good kid, a good guy and what has happened breaks my heart,” he added. London’s Metropolitan Police said officers were called at about 8:00 pm (1900 GMT) on Monday, the final day of the carnival, to reports of a stabbing in Ladbroke Grove and administered emergency first aid. “He was taken to a west London hospital where, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead,” the force added. London mayor Sadiq Khan said he was “sickened” by the stabbing. “Violence has no place on our streets and we are doing everything in our power to root it out,” he added. At the carnival, officers made 209 arrests, including 46 for assault, 33 for possession of an offensive weapon and eight sexual assaults, said the force. Alison Heydari, Commander of Local Policing, said early on Tuesday that “the atmosphere over the past two days has been largely positive” but that on Monday evening “we saw a number of violent incidents”. The Notting Hill Carnival — one of the world’s largest street festivals — was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The three-day celebration of British-Caribbean culture traces its roots back the 1950s after the first surge in arrivals from former British colonies post-World War II. Feathered dancers, steel bands and earth-shaking sound systems feature in the vibrant celebration held over the August bank holiday weekend.

Royal London Cup - Krunal Pandya's Warwickshire stint ended by groin injury

A groin injury has cut short Krunal Pandya's stint with Warwickshire. The allrounder, who was signed by the county team for the Royal London One-Day Cup, is due to return to India on Monday evening.
Krunal picked up the injury while scoring 37 during Warwickshire's match against Nottinghamshire on August 17. He didn't come out to field during the second innings of the match, and also missed Warwickshire's next two games against Middlesex and Durham.

Consultation with doctors has revealed that the injury is likely to keep Krunal out of action for three weeks, leaving him unavailable for the knockout stages should Warwickshire reach them.

"It's frustrating to lose Krunal for the remainder of the tournament, but he leaves the club with our very best wishes," Warwickshire's director of cricket Paul Farbrace said in a statement issued by the county. "Krunal was an excellent role model around the group and I'm sure the younger members of the squad will have learnt a lot from him on and off the pitch.

"Due to the short turnaround, we won't be signing a replacement, however, I'm incredibly excited to see our squad build on Sunday's excellent win over Durham."

Krunal played five Royal London Cup matches for Warwickshire this season, scoring 134 runs at an average of 33.50, including an 82-ball 74 in the tied game against Surrey at The Oval. He picked up nine wickets at 25.00 with his left-arm spin, including successive three-fors against Sussex and Leicestershire.

Warwickshire currently sit in fifth place in Group A of the Royal London Cup, with nine points from seven games, just one point behind the four teams currently ahead of them.

Krunal was one of two Indian players signed by Warwickshire this season, the other being fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, who has been roped in for the closing stages of the County Championship Division 1 season.

The 31-year-old Krunal, who plays for Lucknow Supergiants in the IPL, is hoping to revive his international career, having last played for India during a tour of Sri Lanka in July 2021. He has played five ODIs and 19 T20Is so far.

UK issues ‘danger to life’ warning after severe flooding

LONDON

Southern England experienced torrential rainfall and severe flooding Wednesday following weeks of dry weather.

In response to the extreme weather pattern, the Meteorological Office issued a “danger to life” flood warning covering most parts of the southeast and the capital London.

Across parts of the UK, severe flooding has left homes and businesses damaged with streets underwater. London’s Victoria train station, a major travel hub in the capital, was disrupted by flooding.

"Not long after 3 p.m. this afternoon, station colleagues at London Victoria noticed flooding at the main entrance due to heavy rainfall, with large volumes of water running down the slope leading towards the eastern concourse,” said Network Rail, one of the main operators at the station.

The southwest of England this week has experienced an uptick in thunderstorms and flooding after weeks of hot weather brought on by two successive heat waves.

The subsequent drought that followed the heat waves has made soil dry and arid, raising the risk of flooding.

On Wednesday, the Met Office issued an amber and a yellow warning that lasted throughout the day.

The warnings were made after Thames Water, a major water supplier in the UK, announced plans to impose a hosepipe ban for much of the south.

Under such a ban, people are prohibited from using a hosepipe for things such as watering their garden, filling a pool or washing their car.

The months of July and August experienced the hottest summers after witnessing a record temperature of 40C (104F). Less than 10% rainfall was recorded in all regions across the southeast of England, making it the driest year since 1836.

Women's Hundred 2022 - Charlie Dean to captain London Spirit in place of injured Heather Knight

Dean, the 21-year-old off-spinner, takes over from the vastly experienced Knight, who missed England's entire Commonwealth Games campaign - they lost the bronze-medal play-off to New Zealand - with a hip injury that has left her needing to use crutches and is expected to keep her on the sidelines for a period of months.

"It's a great opportunity for me, I'm really looking forward to leading this team," Dean said. "Obviously, we are gutted that Heather can't join us this year, but we have an exciting squad filled with experience and young talent and we can't wait to get started on Friday."

A relative newcomer to the England set-up, Dean earned her only T20I cap for England during the washed-out second match in that leg of the Ashes series in January. She didn't take the field as play was abandoned in the fifth over with England 25 without loss. Dean was not part of England's squad for the Commonwealth Games, which was played as a T20 competition.

She has played 16 ODIs, making her debut against New Zealand last September, most recently in the series with South Africa, which she finished as leading wicket-taker.

Dean was key to Southern Vipers' Charlotte Edwards Cup triumph in June, taking two wickets and sharing a match-winning partnership with Ella McCaughan to help defeat Central Sparks by six wickets in the final. She was also the competition's second-highest wicket-taker.

In 2021, she took six wickets for London Spirit, who finished their inaugural campaign in fourth place on the eight-team table, at an average of 28.00 and an economy rate of 7.09. During that time, she impressed Knight and made her international debut a short time later.

Dean will lead an impressive international contingent at London Spirit, including two Australian Commonwealth Games gold medallists in Beth Mooney - the Games' leading run-scorer - and fast bowler Megan Schutt, as well as talented New Zealand allrounder Amelia Kerr.

London Spirit open their 2022 season against Southern Brave, last year's runners up, in Southampton on Friday.
