CBI raids a clean chit from Modi government, says AAP

Party leaders say agency officials returned empty-handed even as BJP, Cong. demand CM, Dy. CM’s resignation

Party leaders say agency officials returned empty-handed even as BJP, Cong. demand CM, Dy. CM’s resignation

A day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted searches at Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s residence, AAP leaders said the agency sleuths returned “empty-handed” and termed the exercise a “total failure”.

AAP MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj said the exercise was a “clean chit from the Narendra Modi government”.

“We don’t have a problem with the CBI officers. They are doing their duty, it is their job. They will have to do whatever the Central government asks them to do. Earlier, it was the UPA [United Progressive Alliance] that misused its power, now it is the BJP. We all remember how Prime Minister Modi used to go around harping about the misuse of the CBI when he was on the other side,” said Mr. Bharadwaj.

The CBI conducted raids at 31 locations, including the residences of Mr. Sisodia and Delhi’s former Excise Commissioner Arava Gopi Krishna, across six States and one Union Territory on Friday after it registered an FIR in connection with the AAP government’s excise policy, which was rolled out in November last year.

Demand for Assembly session

Hitting out at AAP, Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said the excise policy was “completely illegal” and demanded that the city government immediately convene an Assembly session to discuss “the scam”.

Meanwhile, Delhi Congress leaders and workers staged a protest outside the AAP’s office on Saturday, demanding the resignation of Mr. Sisodia in connection with the alleged irregularities in the excise policy.

The protesters marched from the Delhi Congress office at DDU Marg towards the AAP headquarters.

Mr. Bidhuri also demanded Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation saying “he was aware of the policy being illegal and was responsible for its execution”.

“Permission was given to open liquor shops in non-conforming and residential areas. The Delhi Cabinet had no right to provide such approvals as the Master Plan-2021 does not allow it. There is a process for changes in the master plan and they are notified only after the approval of the DDA and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. But the Delhi Cabinet deliberately violated the rules of the master plan,” said Mr. Bidhuri.

Israel's forces have killed two Palestinians in the city of Nablus in occupied West Bank, Palestinian media has reported, two days after deadly Israeli air strikes on Gaza was halted by a truce.

At least 30 Palestinians were wounded as Israeli troops raided a house in Nablus on Tuesday, according to the Red Crescent.

"Israeli army and special forces are surrounding the house of a wanted man in Nablus. There is exchange of fire," the Israel's military said in a statement.

Gunfire was traded in the old city of Nablus, according to AFP news agency. Trouble also broke out in other parts of Nablus.

Israeli security forces have conducted frequent operations in occupied West Bank in recent months, focusing on operatives from the Islamic Jihad group.

On Friday, Israel launched what it called a "pre-emptive" aerial and artillery bombardment of Islamic Jihad positions in besieged Gaza, leading the armed group there to fire rockets in retaliation.

An Egypt-brokered ceasefire reached on Sunday ended three days of Israeli bombardment that killed 46 Palestinians, 16 of them children, and wounded 360, according to Gaza's health ministry.

FBI 'raids' former US president Trump's house

Fast News

FBI raid is "prosecutorial misconduct" and "attack by Radical Left Democrats" who don't want him to run for president in 2024, former President Trump said.

Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., is seen Friday, Aug. 30, 2019.

Former President Donald Trump said in a statement on Monday that the FBI was conducting a search of his Mar-a-Lago estate.

"These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents," Trump said in a statement.

The circumstances were not immediately clear. Spokespeople for the FBI and the Justice Department did not return messages seeking comment Monday evening.

“After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate,” Trump said.

The Justice Department has been investigating the discovery of boxes of records containing classified information that were taken to Mar-a-Lago after Trump's presidency had concluded.

It was not clear whether the FBI search was connected to that probe.

"It is prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the Justice System, and an attack by Radical Left Democrats who desperately don't want me to run for President in 2024, especially based on recent polls, and who will likewise do anything to stop Republicans and Conservatives in the upcoming Midterm Elections," Trump said in the statement.

A separate investigation related to efforts by Trump allies to undo the results of the 2020 presidential election and the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol has also been intensifying in Washington.
