Quetta isolated as land, airways shut after floods, heavy rainfall     

QUETTA: After being disconnected from land following heavy rainfall, the aviation authorities have also suspended flight operations to and from Quetta airport, ARY NEWS reported. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has suspended all its flight operations for Quetta after the aviation authorities faced technical issues following heavy rain and floods. According to sources privy to the matter, after disruptions in PTCL and other networks owing to floods, the aviation authorities faced difficulties in radar system and communication facilities. On Thursday, train service between Balochistan and other parts of the country was suspended after a British-built railway bridge collapsed near Bolan’s Machh town, ARY News reported on Thursday. According to details, the railway bridge collapsed in Balochistan’s Bolan district due to heavy rains and flash floods, which wreaked havoc across the country. The collapsed bridge is located between Machh and Kolpur at Hirak in the mountainous Bolan valley. All passenger trains were stopped in Quetta and Jacobabad after the collapse of the bridge. Meanwhile, torrential rains and flash floods swept away a gas pipeline in Machh town near Bolan district. The gas supply to Machh town has been suspended after the pipeline was washed away. Multiple highways connecting Balochistan and its capital have also been washed away in unprecedented rainfall and flash floods and the province remained the most affected and neglected area during the nationwide torrential rainfall.

JAMSHORO: Cloudburst hovered above Jamshoro on Friday as the city witnessed record downpour at 355mm.

Climate Change Minister Senator Sherry Rehman took to her Twitter to share the video, claiming that this was the heaviest ever rainfall recorded across Sindh in one day.

In a time-lapse video, which has now gone viral on social media, cloudburst appear drenching the city and setting a new record for heavy downpour in the span of 24 hours. The last heaviest rainfall recorded in Jamshoro within 24 hours was at 238mm on August 31, 2011.

“Today on 19 Aug 2022 we recorded the heaviest rainfall ever in one day all over Sindh,” she tweeted, crediting the Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) for the video.

The minister deemed the cloudburst over Jamshoro “unprecedented” and mentioned how many areas witnessed non-stop rain for three days.

PMD predicts more rainfall

Earlier today, PMD predicted more rainfall across the country including warnings of flash flooding, particularly in Sindh and Balochistan, between August 19 and 24.

The Met department also advised authorities to remain alert in case of emergencies following the extreme weather.

On August 23 and 24, rainfall with wind and thundershowers is expected to drench Sindh, south Punjab, south and northeastern Balochistan.

PMD warned that urban flooding may affect Sukkur, Dadu, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Shaheed Benazirabad on August 19 and 20.

On the other hand, Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu and Sukkur could also be impacted with urban flooding on August 23 and 24.

Met department shared that low pressure area over upper Sindh is likely to weaken during the next 12 hours, while another low pressure area is likely to approach Sindh from August 23.

“Due to this weather system, monsoon currents are penetrating in upper and southern parts of the country,” a press statement by Met read.

Crop Sowing Affected in UP Due to Low Rainfall; CM Yogi Assures Govt Committed to Safeguard Farmers’ Interests

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed officials to keep an eye on the situation arising in the state with crop sowing being affected in 15 districts due to lesser rainfall. The UP CM has instructed departments of agriculture, irrigation, relief, and revenue, among others, to stay on alert mode.

This year, till July 31, the state has received a total of 191.8 mm of rainfall, which is less than 353.65 mm in the year 2021 and 349.85 mm in the year 2020. Meanwhile, Agra was the only district that received normal (more than 120%) rainfall.

CM Yogi Adityanath has said that the government is determined to safeguard the interests of all farmers and if needed, it will also give financial assistance to farmers to ensure that not a single farmer suffers.

Firozabad, Etah, Hathras, Kheri, Auraiya, Chitrakoot, Pratapgarh, Varanasi and Hapur received normal rainfall (80% to 120%) while downpour in Mathura, Balrampur, Lalitpur, Etawah, Bhadohi, Ambedkar Nagar, Muzaffarnagar, Ghazipur, Kannauj, Jalaun, Meerut, Sambhal, Sonbhadra, Lucknow, Saharanpur and Mirzapur have received below normal (60%-80%). There are 30 districts in the state where only 40% to 60% of the normal rainfall has been recorded while 19 districts have received less than 40 per cent rainfall. As per information, the sowing of Kharif crops has been affected in these districts.

Kanpur, Amroha, Moradabad, Gonda, Mau, Bahraich, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ghaziabad, Kaushambi, Ballia, Shravasti, Gautam Budh Nagar, Shahjahanpur, Kushinagar, Jaunpur, Kanpur Dehat, Farrukhabad and Rampur received only 40% of the rainfall as compared to normal. CM Yogi has instructed that special attention should be given to these districts.

The rainy season usually starts in Uttar Pradesh by June 15 and continues till September 15. Rainfall ensures the prosperity of agriculture. The monsoon is not normal this time. However, along with irrigation from natural rainwater, the irrigation facility has been improved by the government with the expansion of canals, and tube wells. Rampur has received only 18% of the rainfall as compared to normal, but till now 98% of the Kharif crop seeds have been sown here.

According to the meteorologists, the rainfall conditions will be normal in August and September. There are 15 districts where crop sowing is less than 75% of the target.

The UP Government has asked various departments including Agriculture, Irrigation, Relief, and Revenue-related departments to stay in alert mode. The departments have been asked to maintain continuous communication with farmers through Krishi Vigyan Kendras, agricultural universities and agricultural scientists in each district.

Section 144 imposed in Karachi amid rainfall

KARACHI: To ensure the safety of the public, section 144 (6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure has been imposed in the Karachi division with effect from July 25 to 31.

The action has been taken to stop citizens from swimming, diving, bathing, and boating in the sea following the ongoing heavy rainfall and high tides in the sea within the city’s torrential limit, a notification issued by the Office of the Commissioner Karachi stated on Monday.

The notification prohibits the public from participating in the aforementioned activities, as they may cause harm to life and there is a risk of increased incidents of drowning. Therefore, necessary measures are imposed to prevent incidents of such nature within the Karachi Division.

“The Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners of Karachi Division are hereby authorised to take action against the violators in coordination with the concerned Senior Superintendents of Police and get the violators booked under section 188 PPC in writing in the concerned Police Stations for the violation of Section 144 Cr. P.C,” the notification reads.
