  • A Gauteng woman is accused of killing her grandmother.
  • The woman allegedly set the elderly woman's body alight and buried her in the yard.
  • She then used her slain relative's bank and Sassa cards after reporting her missing.

A 31-year-old Gauteng woman is accused of single-handedly killing her grandmother, setting her body alight, digging a hole and burying her in the yard in December 2019. The woman then covered the grave with a steel box before using the old woman's bank and South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) cards. This is according to the information contained in an indictment in the case against 31-year-old Rachael Tshabalala, who is currently on trial in the Gauteng High Court sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court. Tshabalala was apparently living with her grandmother, Nomalanga Hilda Tshabalala, in Emndeni, Soweto.  They were last seen together on 14 December 2019 - but, five days later, Tshabalala reported her grandmother missing.  READ | Multiple murders: 664 people killed in 284 incidents between April, June In September 2020, Tshabalala was arrested and charged with defrauding Sassa. She was caught using her grandmother's card. During the time that Nomalanga had gone missing, her family rented out the house to tenants.  The truth about what happened to the old woman only came to light in September 2021, a year after Tshabalala was arrested on fraud charges.  How safe is your neighbourhood? Find out by using News24's CrimeCheck While Tshabalala was in prison, a tenant, who was cleaning the yard, found the old woman's remains and contacted the police.   "The remains of the deceased were found, and her identity was established by DNA profiling. The cause of death is unknown at this stage," claims the indictment. Tshabalala is facing charges of murder, theft, fraud, defeating the ends of justice as well as statutory perjury.

A woman in Oklahoma climbed through the sunroof of a vehicle parked outside a Walmart this week to rescue two 2-year-olds left inside, according to reports.

The vehicle was reportedly parked in direct sunlight during a 98-degree day.

Elizabeta Babb, 33, was arrested after she exited an Oklahoma City Walmart after shopping for over a half hour while her two toddlers were strapped in their car seats.

The 2-year-old girls were reportedly "unresponsive and buckled in their car seats" when they were found.

Gang-raped Muslim woman 'numb' after India frees convicts

"The release of these convicts has taken from me my peace and shaken my faith in justice," says Bilkis Bano of 11 Hindu men convicted of 2002 crime and released by BJP-ruled western Gujarat state.

Bilkis Bano and two of her children were the only survivors among a group of 17 Muslims attacked by a Hindu mob in western state of Gujarat in 2002.

A Muslim woman who was gang-raped as 14 other people were murdered during one of post-independence India's worst religious riots has said she is "numb" after her attackers were released early from prison.

Bilkis Bano said in a statement released by her lawyer on Wednesday that she was "bereft of words. I am still numb." "I trusted the highest courts in our land. I trusted the system, and I was learning slowly to live with my trauma.

"The release of these convicts has taken from me my peace and shaken my faith in justice. My sorrow and my wavering faith are not for myself alone but for every woman who is struggling for justice in courts," she said.

On Thursday around a dozen people staged a demonstration in New Delhi against the release of the men.

Bilkis and two of her children were the only survivors among a group of 17 Muslims attacked by a Hindu mob in the western state of Gujarat in 2002.

Bilkis was pregnant at the time and seven of those killed were relatives including her three-year-old daughter. The attack took place when current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was Gujarat state premier.

Eleven Hindu men were later sentenced to life in prison but were freed on Monday, with the Gujarat government timing its announcement to coincide with celebrations for the 75th anniversary of India's independence.

The attackers, released following a recommendation by a state government panel, were greeted by relatives outside the prison who gave them sweets and touched their feet in a traditional Indian sign of respect.

Ruling BJP defends release of convicts

On Thursday, opposition politician Rahul Gandhi, grandson of former premier Indira Gandhi, tweeted: "Prime Minister... the entire country is seeing the difference between your words and deeds."

Modi was accused of turning a blind eye to the riots but was cleared of any wrongdoing in 2012, two years before becoming leader of the Hindu-majority nation that is home to 200 million Muslims.

"BJP's bias for a religion is such that even brutal rape & hate crimes are forgivable," prominent Muslim politician Asaduddin Owaisi said, referring to Modi's ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

The Gujarat state government, run by the BJP, defended the decision to release the men.

"The remission of the 11 convicts was considered after taking various factors like life imprisonment term in India which is typically of 14 years or more, age, behaviour of the person and so on," senior official Raj Kumar was quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying.

According to the official toll, around 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were hacked, beaten, shot or burnt to death in the riots, which erupted after 59 Hindu pilgrims died in a train fire that was blamed on a Muslim mob.

More than three dozen Muslims were later convicted over the fire, although the cause remains disputed.

Ashleigh Buhai makes history at Muirfield, becomes first SA woman since Sally Little to win a major

South Africa's Ashleigh Buhai survived a disastrous 15th hole to claim a "life-changing" victory in a marathon playoff against Chun In-gee in the Women's Open at Muirfield on Sunday.

Both players tied on 10 under par after 72 holes, and, in near total darkness, it was Buhai who eventually secured the final major of the season with a par four at the fourth extra hole, the 18th.

Chun bunkered her drive and took five, while Buhai got up and down from a greenside bunker, holing out from two feet for victory.

Buhai made history by becoming only the third South African woman to win a major golf championship.

Golf Hall of famer Sally Little won the Women's PGA Championship in 1980 and the 1988 Du Maurier Classic, which was a women's major from 1979 until 2000. Alison Sheard also won the Women's Open in 1979 at Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club.

Buhai was close to tears as husband David rushed onto the green and gave her a kiss and a loving hug.

"It's been a lot of hard work over many years," said the 33-year-old, who won the first of three South African Amateur titles when she was just 14.

Her professional career has never quite hit the same heights with three wins in Europe and two South African Opens. But she had never won an LPGA title until now, and a major at that to make it even more special.

Five ahead overnight, she had to survive a triple-bogey seven at the 15th - that dragged her back into a tie with Chun - before snatching the dramatic playoff win.

"I'm very proud of myself," she continued. "I had to dig deep. But I was surprisingly calm in the play-off. Just tried to stay in the moment.

"Before I hit the bunker shot in the play-off, my caddie (Tanya Paterson) said 'show them why you are ranked No.1 in bunkers this year'. It was great to do it."

Gary Player (1959) and Ernie Els (2002), Buhai's hero growing up, are South African winners of the Open Championship at Muirfield.

Magnanimous Chun

"I am so proud to join them as major winners at Muirfield," Buhai continued.

"It really is going to be life-changing."

Chun was magnanimous in defeat.

The winner of three majors, including this year's Women's PGA Championship, said: "I never gave up, and gave it may all."

The 27-year-old Korean added: "Ashleigh played a brilliant bunker shot and she deserved it. I am very happy for her."

Buhai had looked in total control when she led by three shots with just four to play.

But she drove into a bunker at the 15th, hit out sideways into rough and then moved the ball just a few yards with her third shot on the way to a triple-bogey seven.

Now tied for the lead, she did well to par the final three holes for a 75 that matched Chun's 10-under par total. The Korean closed with a round of 70.

Japan's Hinako Shibuno, the 2019 winner, finished third on nine under after a final round 71.

American teenager Rose Zhang won the Smyth Salver for the leading amateur. She closed with a 73 for one over par.

Buhai's victory was also South Africa's first major - men and women - since Ernie Els' 2012 Open win at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

The two other South Africans in the field made the cut: Paula Reto finished tied for 58th and Lee-Ann Pace ended 65th.

The 46-year-old woman, who could not bear children anymore, was shocked to find that her stomach had started growing

Doctors from a government maternity hospital in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati successfully removed a tumour weighing 35 kg from a rural woman’s stomach.

A few months ago, 46-year-old Nagamma, who could not bear children anymore, was shocked when her stomach started growing. A homemaker from Poluru village, she approached doctors who diagnosed a small tumour in her stomach that they told her should be removed.

Scared of the word “surgery”, Nagamma stopped visiting the hospital. But, as days passed by, her stomach kept growing as the tumour kept increasing in size. Soon, she was unable to move due to the weight of the tumour.

At last, when she visited the hospital in Tirupati again, she was operated upon under the supervision of hospital superintendent Dr Lakshmi Susila and senior gynaecologist Dr Parthasarathi Reddy. A team of expert doctors performed the surgery on her for over an hour and removed the massive tumour from her stomach. A doctor from the team, Dr K Madhavi Tagore, said Nagamma was recovering well after the surgery.
