Russia mourns nationalist's daughter killed in car bomb

Moscow blames Ukrainian intelligence and vows "no mercy" for killers of Daria Dugina, daughter of a pro-Kremlin intellectual. Kiev denies any involvement.

Russia's powerful FSB security agency says it has solved the crime –– just two days after the incident –– naming a Ukrainian woman as Dugina's attacker.

Russia has vowed "no mercy" for the killers of Daria Dugina, the daughter of an ultranationalist intellectual, as hundreds gathered for her funeral following her death in a car bomb blast over the weekend. "I believe that this is a barbaric crime for which there is no forgiveness," Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told journalists on Tuesday, calling for "no mercy" for those responsible. Moscow says Ukrainian intelligence was behind the attack –– a claim dismissed by Kiev. Alexander Dugin, a vocal supporter of the Kremlin's military campaign in Ukraine who has claimed to be close to President Vladimir Putin, may have been the intended target of the attack that killed his 29-year-old daughter. Mourners, many carrying flowers, paid their respects at a hall in Moscow's Ostankino TV centre where Dugina's black-and-white portrait was displayed over an open casket. Dugin and his wife, both dressed in black, sat next to their daughter's coffin. "She died for the people, for Russia, at the front. The front –– it is here," Dugin said at the ceremony. "Since childhood, among her first words –– that we taught her of course –– were Russia, our state, our people, our empire," he added. Dugina was killed on Saturday when a bomb placed in her car went off as she drove on a highway outside Moscow. Ukrainian woman behind Dugina's attacker? Russia's powerful FSB security agency said on Monday it had solved the crime –– just two days after the incident –– naming a Ukrainian woman as Dugina's attacker. It said the perpetrator had rented an apartment in the same building as Dugina and followed her in a car, suggesting that Dugina was the intended victim. Ukraine has denied any involvement. "It is certainly not our responsibility," President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday evening. The US Department of State said on Monday that it condemned targeting civilians, while stating that Ukraine had denied any involvement. Russia's retorted that Washington's reaction "discredits the international activity" of the United States. "Washington has no moral right... to judge human rights in remote parts of the world, since the murder of a journalist is not even commented on from this angle," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on social media. Scott Disick suffered minor injuries in a car crash over the weekend

Deputies said alcohol was not a factor in the crash and Disick was the only occupant in the car. "It was determined the primary cause of the traffic collision was speed and alcohol was not a factor. Mr. Disick suffered minor, non-life threatening injuries and declined medical treatment," the Sherrif's Department said in a statement to CNN. "He was picked up from the scene by family members and his vehicle was towed away per his request," they added. CNN has reached out to Disick's representative for comment.

The reality TV star and businessman shares three children with Kourtney Kardashian.

Car Bomb Kills Daughter of Kremlin Hardline Ideologue

The daughter of Alexader Dugin, a hardline Russian ideologue close to President Vladimir Putin, has been killed in a car bombing on Moscow's outskirts, authorities said on Sunday. According to family members quoted by Russian media, Dugin — a vocal supporter of Kremlin's offensive in Ukraine — was the likely target of the blast as his daughter borrowed his car at the last minute. Daria Dugina, born in 1992, was killed when a bomb placed in her Toyota Land Cruiser went off as she drove on a highway near the village of Bolshie Vyzyomy, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) outside Moscow, Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement. Dugina died on the scene and a homicide investigation has been opened, said the committee, which probes major crime cases in Russia. Dugin, sometimes called  "Putin's Rasputin" or "Putin's brain," is an outspoken Russian ultranationalist intellectual. He has long advocated the unification of Russian-speaking territories in a vast new Russian empire and wholeheartedly supported Moscow's operation in Ukraine.  He was put on a Western sanctions list after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, a move he also backed. The head of one of Ukraine's breakaway separatist regions blamed the blast on Kyiv authorities. "The Ukrainian regime terrorists tried to liquidate Alexander Dugin, but blew up his daughter," DNR chief Denis Pushilin wrote on Telegram.

A woman in Oklahoma climbed through the sunroof of a vehicle parked outside a Walmart this week to rescue two 2-year-olds left inside, according to reports.

The vehicle was reportedly parked in direct sunlight during a 98-degree day.

Elizabeta Babb, 33, was arrested after she exited an Oklahoma City Walmart after shopping for over a half hour while her two toddlers were strapped in their car seats.

The 2-year-old girls were reportedly "unresponsive and buckled in their car seats" when they were found.

Deadly shooting: Witness carried boy, 9, to clinic after mom and son shot in car outside Midrand mosque

A mother and son were shot outside Nizamiye Mosque in Midrand, Johannesburg.

A mother and son were shot outside Nizamiye Mosque in Midrand, Johannesburg.

  • A 9-year-old boy died after sustaining gunshot wounds on Tuesday.
  • His 41-year-old mother had fetched him and his sister, 13, when two men fired at them.
  • The 13-year-old was unharmed, while the woman was receiving medical treatment in hospital.

A parent who witnessed the shooting of a 9-year-old boy and his mother outside the Nizamiye Mosque in Midrand, Johannesburg, carried the child's bloodied body to the school clinic to save his life, but he succumbed to his wounds shortly thereafter.

Two unknown assailants shot the Grade 3 pupil and his mother, 41, multiple times on Tuesday afternoon.

The woman had fetched her son and daughter, 13, from school when the men fired several shots at them and their vehicle.

The girl was unharmed.

When New24 arrived at Nizamiye Primary and High School, the scene had been cleared. Law enforcement officers and forensic experts had finalised their preliminary investigation and were seen leaving the premises.

They said they were not able to share any details about the incident.

'Everybody is shaken'

School principal Ramzi Hasanli told News24 he was not at the school when the deadly shooting occurred about 100 metres from the main gate.

He said parents who had come to fetch their children and pupils witnessed the incident.

"One of the parents who witnessed the shooting carried the body [of the 9-year-old boy] to the clinic. The child died at the clinic, and [forensic experts have] now taken him for a post-mortem investigation. Everybody is shaken. It's very tragic," said Hasanli.

According to Hasanli, the 13-year-old girl is a Grade 7 pupil at the school. She was safe and with her relatives.

Due to the sensitivity of the investigation, and to protect the identity of the 13-year-old pupil, her mother and brother cannot be identified.

The 41-year-old woman is being treatment at a Johannesburg hospital for gunshot wounds.

Hasanli said none of the eyewitnesses recognised the vehicle used by the assailants and they could not confirm how many gunshots were fired.

He said there were five visible gunshots to the woman's vehicle.

He said teaching would continue through the week and that pupils who had witnessed the incident would receive counselling from the South African Depression and Anxiety Group and the Department of Education's psychological unit.

"It will be difficult for working parents to make urgent arrangements to keep the children at home so the school will operate... In the next few days, we will discuss what [safety] measures will be taken," he said.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said details of the shooting were sketchy. He said police were yet to arrest the two attackers who sped off after the shooting.

"A case of murder and attempted murder has been open for investigation," said Masondo.

Anne Heche in critical condition following fiery car crash

The driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when she ran off the road and collided with a residence, Los Angeles Police Public Information Officer Jeff Lee tells CNN. The impact left the car engulfed in flames and the driver suffered burn injuries. She was taken to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics in critical condition. It took firefighters more than an hour to "access, confine and fully extinguish the stubborn flames within the heavily damaged structure," the LAFD said.

There were no other injuries reported.

CNN has contacted representatives of Heche for comment.

Heche first rose to fame on the soap opera "Another World," where she played the dual role of twins Vicky Hudson and Marley Love from 1987 to 1991 and earned a Daytime Emmy Award for her performance. She followed that with roles in films like "Donnie Brasco," "Six Days Seven Nights," and "Wag the Dog."

Her romantic relationship with Ellen DeGeneres in the late '90s resulted in intense media attention at the time, much to Heche's professional frustration. In a 2021 interview with Page Six, Heche said she felt "blacklisted" after going public with their relationship.

"I didn't do a studio picture for 10 years," said Heche, who dated DeGeneres from 1997 to 2000.

Heche has appeared in numerous television series more recently, including "The Brave," "Quantico," and "Chicago P.D." She has several acting projects currently in post-production, according to her IMDB profile.

Kosovo postpones decisions on car plates, entry-exit documents with Serbia

Kosovo's PM Kurti said the decision has been taken in cooperation with international allies for 30 days on the condition that all barricades are removed and complete freedom of movement is restored.

Gendarmeries and security forces block the road as security measures are taken around the city while air raid sirens are heard near the Kosovo/Serbian border, in Mitrovica, Kosovo on July 31, 2022.

Kosovo has postponed the decision for a month which introduced the application of national license plates and border crossing documents with Serbia in the country.

The decision came after Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani and Prime Minister Albin Kurti met with American and European international representatives.

"On this occasion, the Government of Kosova pledges to delay the implementation of the two decisions of 29 June 2022 until 1 September 2022, starting from that moment on Monday, 1 August 2022, once all barricades are removed and complete freedom of movement is restored on all roads in the north of Kosova," the government said in a press release.

The government condemned the Kosovo Serbs' action to close the border crossings on Sunday, claiming that it was planned by the Serbian capital, Belgrade.

"We thank our international partners, and US Ambassador Jeffrey Hovenier in particular, for their involvement and contribution," the press release added.

Cavusoglu in contact with Serbian, Kosovar counterparts

Türkiye’s foreign minister held separate phone calls on Sunday with his Kosovar and Serbian counterparts as tensions between Serbia and Kosovo continued to rise.

Mevlut Cavusoglu stressed that “common sense must prevail” in the region, according to a statement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

Underlining the importance that Türkiye attaches to peace and stability in the Balkans, Cavusoglu said Ankara is ready to do its part to reduce tensions.

Separately, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of EU Commission Josep Borrel welcomed Pristina's decision.

"Expect all roadblocks to be removed immediately. Open issues should be addressed through EU-facilitated Dialogue & focus on comprehensive normalisation of relations btwn Kosovo & Serbia, essential for their EU integration paths," Borrell said.

KFOR ready to intervene

NATO's forces in Kosovo are prepared to intervene if stability is endangered in the north of Kosovo, KFOR said in a press release.

Tensions between Pristina and Belgrade are running high as air raid sirens were heard for more than three hours in the small border town of Mitrovica.

"The NATO-led KFOR mission is monitoring closely and is prepared to intervene if stability is jeopardised, in accordance with its mandate, coming from UNSC Resolution 1244 of 1999," the statement said on late Sunday.
