Reuters reveals Biden's emergency board calls for railroad wage hikes to resolve contract talks

Automotive

Reuters exclusively reported that U.S. President Joe Biden’s emergency board, tasked with helping major freight railroads and unions end a contract negotiation stalemate, proposed annual wage increases of between 4% and 7% through 2024. A lockout or strike could send prices for necessities higher and upend battered U.S. supply chains ahead of mid-term elections that will determine whether Biden’s Democratic party holds narrow control of the House of Representatives and Senate.

Pakistan Women head coach David Hemp not to extend two-year contract in October

David Hemp, the head coach of Pakistan Women, will not extend his two-year contract in October, the PCB confirmed on Tuesday. Hemp, who was the second overseas coach for the women's team, said he took the "difficult decision" to spend more time with his young family.
"I have enjoyed living in Pakistan and working with the women cricketers, but it has also been difficult on me and my young family as I have been unable to spend enough time with them like any other father," Hemp said in a statement issued by PCB. "After consulting my family, I have conveyed this difficult decision to the Pakistan Cricket Board, which has very graciously understood my situation and accepted my decision.

"It has been incredibly enjoyable and satisfying working with the girls. Although results in international arena may not truly reflect the hard work and effort that went into the planning and preparations, I am satisfied that I gave my very best and the girls equally responded."

Hemp had taken charge from Iqbal Imam, who was appointed in an interim capacity after Mark Coles' exit in October 2019. He oversaw Pakistan's progress in the Women's World Cup Qualifier last year, the Women's World Cup earlier this year and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last month.
While Pakistan failed to get past the league stages at the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games, they managed to end their streak of 18 losses in the competition in New Zealand, when they beat West Indies by eight wickets. Moreover, the rise of young Fatima Sana has been one of the positives from Hemp's tenure.

"I was especially pleased with the emergence of Fatima Sana, who won the ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2021 award and became the first Pakistan women cricketer to win the ICC Cricketer of the Month award and displayed her excellent talent in the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games," he said. "I am optimistic we will see many more young women cricketers from domestic competitions and talent hunt programmes to enter the Pakistan framework and contribute in the teams' future achievements.

"I want to thank everyone at the Pakistan Cricket Board, women's wing and the entire side who not only backed and supported me but also made my stay memorable and comfortable. I will remain a big fan of Pakistan women's cricket, will continue to follow their progress with excitement and remain confident that better results and successes await them down the road."

More recently, ahead of the Commonwealth Games, Pakistan blanked Sri Lanka 3-0 in the T20I series at home before taking the ODI series 2-1. Their next assignment is the ODI series at home against Ireland in November, which will be part of the ICC Women's Championship.

Tania Mallick, PCB head of women's wing, paid tribute to Hemp by saying, "It is sad to lose someone of David's caliber, enthusiasm and strong work ethics, but at the same we also understand and accept that family has to come first. The PCB thanks David for all his efforts and contributions, and wishes him best of luck in his future endeavours."

Jets agree to contract with tackle Duane Brown: report

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The New York Jets and offensive tackle Duane Brown agreed to terms on a two-year contract Thursday, a person with direct knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.

The move came three days after the Jets learned they likely lost Mekhi Becton for the season because of a knee injury suffered in practice.

The person spoke to The AP on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the signing. ESPN first reported the agreement between the Jets and Brown. NFL Network reported the deal is worth $22 million.

Brown, who turns 37 on Aug. 30, visited the Jets and attended their scrimmage at MetLife Stadium last Saturday night. Coach Robert Saleh acknowledged there was "mutual interest," and Becton's injury made a deal even more likely.

Becton suffered a chip fracture to his kneecap during the second play of 11-on-11 team drills Monday. The initial prognosis was optimistic, but an MRI later revealed more damage to the knee than first expected.

After Becton injured the same knee in the season opener last year, George Fant slid from right tackle to the left side and played well. Fant retained the starting spot at left tackle entering camp, with Becton moving over to the right side for the first time.

Saleh praised Fant’s play in Becton’s absence and said the versatile veteran was "much more comfortable" playing left tackle. But the addition of Brown — Fant’s former teammate in Seattle — means Fant could again move to the right side.

Brown, who made his fifth Pro Bowl appearance last season, has played left tackle his entire NFL career.

The Jets were working Chuma Edoga and rookie Max Mitchell at right tackle in Becton’s absence. Conor McDermott was also considered to be in the mix, but he will be sidelined at least another week with a lower ankle injury.

Brown was a first-round pick by Houston out of Virginia Tech in 2008. He was selected an All-Pro in 2012 and made three straight Pro Bowls from 2012-14 before being traded to Seattle during the 2017 season.

Trent Boult released from NZC contract

New Zealand Cricket is confident that Trent Boult's decision to leave his central contract will not lead other players into a similar step despite the lure of the expanding domestic T20 scene.

While Boult's move, which has only come to a head over the last week, is not a retirement from international cricket, it means he will play much less for New Zealand - his selection will be made on a case-by-case basis - with priority given to those players who hold central or domestic contracts.

"What the debate has been is that is this going to start more players doing this from a New Zealand point of view? We've had no approaches from anyone else," David White, the NZC CEO, told ESPNcricinfo. "They [the players] are still talking about Test cricket - and performing for New Zealand - as being incredibly important. And we've got a global event every year now.

"The other thing is that if you are going to get a big offer from a big league, you've got to be a successful international cricketer. So it's very important that players perform in bilateral cricket as well."

The desire to tour less and spend more time with his family was a key part in Boult's decision, with White adding that the impact of Covid restrictions had been a factor too.

"He's struggled more than most over the last year or two with isolation - he's got three young boys - and we've tried to manage his workload, but think it's still got to a stage where he's found it incredibly difficult to be away from home," White said.

However, there is also the link to the rapidly-growing T20 franchise world. NZC, which is unable to pay centrally-contracted players sums to match that available in England, Australia and India, has taken a pragmatic approach to the IPL for a number of years, allowing players to miss late-season home matches to join the league, and then either arrive very close for international fixtures or even miss the occasional Test.

But White said that such an approach would not extend more broadly given the impact it could have on the New Zealand season.

"We've indicated today that we are going to be very protective of our domestic window," he said.

As with many teams, the upcoming crunch of T20 leagues in January impacts a period where New Zealand will usually be involved in international cricket, although this season it will see them overseas in Pakistan rather than at home, while it is also the heart of a domestic calendar which will include the Super Smash T20 competition.

Following the ongoing tour of the West Indies, which Boult will complete, New Zealand's schedule includes an ODI series in Australia, a T20I tri-series at home ahead of the men's T20 World Cup, a home series against India and then a tour of Pakistan. Their home season then resumes with visits by England and Sri Lanka.

Boult is still expected to be part of the World Cup, but beyond that, White said the parameters for any future selection had yet to be firmed up.

New Zealand news - NZC agrees to release Trent Boult from central contract

New Zealand Cricket has agreed to release Trent Boult from his central contract after the fast bowler requested to spend more time with his family and to make himself available for T20 leagues with his international career now to be "significantly reduced".

Boult, 33, had held several conversations with NZC prior to Wednesday's announcement. The move will have huge ramifications for New Zealand given the proliferation of T20 leagues that are popping up within the time period of their summer domestic season.

An announcement is expected soon about Boult's involvement in one of the new T20 leagues in either the UAE or South Africa, but NZC chief executive David White told ESPNcricinfo that he was still "highly likely" to be selected for the T20 World Cup in Australia with planning well advanced for that competition. He will also complete the ongoing tour of West Indies.

NZC released a statement explaining that Boult had made it clear to David White that his appetite for touring had diminished and he wished to spend more time with his family.

"This has been a really tough decision for me and I'd like to thank NZC for their support in getting to this point," Boult said. "Playing cricket for my country was a childhood dream and I'm so proud of everything I've been able to achieve with the Black Caps over the past 12 years.

"Ultimately this decision is about my wife Gert and our three young boys. Family has always been the biggest motivator for me and I feel comfortable with putting it first and preparing ourselves for life after cricket."

Boult has not retired from international cricket but he is likely to play a lot less with White confirming that Boult was aware of the ramifications of his decision and that NZC would prioritise contracted players.

"We've had several conversations and I know Trent understands that, in terms of selection, NZC will continue to make a priority of those players with either central or domestic contracts," White said.

Boult understood that his decision would affect his selection for New Zealand.

"I still have a big desire to represent my country and feel I have the skills to deliver at the international level," he said. "However, I respect the fact that not having a national contract will affect my chances of selection.

"Having said that, as a fast bowler I know I have a limited career span, and I feel the time is right to move into this next phase."

White said he was sad to be losing Boult as a centrally contracted player but understood his decision.

"We respect Trent's position," White said. "He's been completely honest and up-front with us about his reasoning and, while we're sad to be losing him as a fully-contracted player, he leaves with our best wishes and our sincere thanks.

"Trent's made a massive contribution to the Black Caps since his Test debut in late 2011 and is now considered one of the best multi-format cricketers in the world. We're very proud of what he's achieved."

Earlier this year, Boult went straight from the IPL into the Test series against England. He played 16 games for Rajasthan Royals, including the final in Ahmedabad on May 29, before playing in the Test match at Lord's just five days later on June 2 where he bowled nearly 38 overs. However, he has since been rested from New Zealand's limited-overs tours around Europe.

Boult has represented New Zealand 215 times across all three formats after debuting against Australia in the famous 2011 Test victory in Hobart. He is one of only four men to have taken 300 Test wickets for New Zealand, having taken 317 scalps at 27.49 with 10 five-wicket hauls and one ten-for. He also has 169 ODI wickets and 62 in T20Is. He is currently the No.1 ranked ODI bowler in the world and is ranked 11th on the Test rankings.

Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga denied NOC to play in the Hundred, forced to pull out of £100,000 contract

Wanindu Hasaranga has been denied a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) to play in the Hundred by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and has been forced to pull out of his £100,000 contract with Manchester Originals as a result.

Ashley de Silva, SLC's chief executive, told ESPNcricinfo that the board turned down his request because they want him to be physically and mentally fresh ahead of the Asia Cup, which starts on August 27, and the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

Originals had previously expected Hasaranga to miss the Hundred due to a clash with the Lanka Premier League, before that tournament was postponed. They will have the option to retain him for the 2023 season if they can agree a contract with him.
ESPNcricinfo understands Tristan Stubbs, the middle-order batter who hit 72 off 28 balls in the first T20l against England last week, has been signed as a replacement and will link up with Originals after South Africa's second T20I against Ireland on Friday.

Originals play their first game of the 2022 season against Northern Superchargers at Emirates Old Trafford on Friday night and are likely to fill their three overseas slots with Andre Russell, Ashton Turner and Sean Abbott. Turner is expected to drop out of the XI when Stubbs is available and then return to the side when Russell leaves for the CPL, which starts on September 1.

Elsewhere, Welsh Fire confirmed on Thursday that Naseem Shah has withdrawn from the tournament after his selection for Pakistan's tour to the Netherlands and the Asia Cup. Naseem did not play in Fire's defeat to Southern Brave on the opening night and will not link up with the squad. They are yet to announce a replacement.

Birmingham Phoenix have brought in Brett D'Oliveira, the Worcestershire allrounder, and Timm van der Gugten, the Glamorgan seamer, as injury replacements for Tom Abell and Olly Stone respectively. "We're delighted to add two experienced players to the Phoenix men's squad," Craig Flindall, their general manager, said.
