BCB to decide on Russell Domingo's future as Bangladesh head coach on Monday

The BCB will take a call on Russell Domingo's future as Bangladesh's head coach on August 22. Board president Nazmul Hassan has indicated that Bangladesh are "trying to separate" roles and that Domingo might stay on as the Test and ODI coach. Hassan had said a couple of days ago that the BCB were looking to make "drastic changes" ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup
It is understood that BCB and Domingo haven't been on the best of terms over the last 12 months. Bangladesh's recent losses in the T20I and ODI series in Zimbabwe has added to the tension. Jalal Yunus, BCB's cricket operations chairman, had even said earlier this month that Domingo wasn't aggressive enough as a coach in the T20 format.

Domingo is also set to take part in the BCB discussions on Monday.

"We haven't decided on (Domingo)," Hassan said on Friday. "We will sit together on August 22, and then we will decide. There will be a lot of changes. Not just one or two. Whether we will include Russell Domingo in our changes or not, will be decided on August 22. We will listen to everyone on that day. For now, we want Domingo to concentrate on Tests and ODIs. We are trying to separate everything.

"There's so much cricket that it is hard for Domingo to concentrate on three formats. He can't even go to some of the series, if you look at our contract with him. He has specific breaks. We have to keep these things in mind. It is not that easy."

Under Domingo, Bangladesh have won just 19 out of 46 T20Is. They achieved 4-1 and 3-2 wins against Australia and New Zealand last year but many believe those two victories were because of tailor-made raging turners in Mirpur. Bangladesh had a poor T20 World Cup last year, losing all their matches in the Super 12 round, and later lost series against Pakistan, Afghanistan, West Indies and Zimbabwe.

"Mentality is one of the factors," Hassan said. "There's no connection between Tests and ODIs with T20s. So considering these things, we are trying to plan separately. We might separate the coaching staff too, if possible. We will see what happens in the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup. Then we will take that decision. Whether we will keep Sriram after the T20 World Cup or not, will depend on the performance."

In Tests under Domingo, Bangladesh have won three out of 20 matches and are languishing at the bottom of the World Test Championship table - they finished last in the previous WTC cycle too. Their only significant win was against New Zealand at the start of 2022. Bangladesh have had a good run in the ODIs under Domingo, winning seven out of nine series under him.

Andre Russell says I want to win another World Cup for West Indies

Andre Russell has insisted he still wants to win "another World Cup - or two more - for West Indies" and that he still has ambitions to play international cricket.
Russell has not played for West Indies since the T20 World Cup in November 2021. Last week, he responded to head coach Phil Simmons' suggestions that he should not be "begging" players to make themselves available for international cricket, writing "I know this was coming but am gonna stay quiet!!!" with four 'angry' emojis in a since-deleted Instagram post.

Russell, who is currently in England playing for Manchester Originals in the Hundred, was asked about his situation by Daren Sammy, the former West Indies captain, during Sky Sports' build-up to their game against Welsh Fire on Tuesday night.

"I'm going to be quiet," Russell said, "because at the end of the day, we had a discussion, and the discussion was very clear. So now, making me look bad, throwing me under the bus… I was expecting it. I'm going to stay quiet, Daren, to be honest."

But Russell did respond when Sammy asked if he still wanted to play for West Indies, saying: "Of course, of course. The maroon is all over.

"Honestly, I have two franchise hundreds and I wish those hundreds were actually playing for West Indies. I don't regret saying this just now. I really enjoyed playing for Jamaica Tallawahs but those two hundreds, it would be more special coming in international cricket.

"I always want to play and give back. But at the end of the day, if we are not agreeing on certain terms, you terms is my terms [sic], and they have to respect my terms as well. At the end of the day, it is what it is. We have families and we have to make sure that we give our best opportunity while we have one career.

"It's not like I can start over again. I'm 34 and I want to win another World Cup - or two more - for West Indies because at the end of the day, I'm here now, and I'm just taking it day by day."

Russell will leave the Hundred next week to play in the CPL for Trinbago Knight Riders, and Desmond Haynes, West Indies' lead selector, has suggested that performances in that tournament will be a major factor in World Cup selection. "If there is a competition that is run by the West Indies [and] somebody is playing well, I think his name should really come up for selection," he said last week.

Zim vs Ban 2022 - 2nd ODI - Russell Domingo

Bangladesh's bowlers were out of sync with the plans that had been discussed, and repeated mistakes, according to head coach Russell Domingo, and that was the reason they failed to defend two decent totals in a row in the ODI series against Zimbabwe. Both matches were lost by five wickets, as 304 and 291 were chased down with enough to spare; this, after Zimbabwe won the T20I series too.
This was Bangladesh's poorest bowling performance in an ODI series in the last 18 months. And it came after their best performance, when they beat West Indies 3-0 last month.

"[Zimbabwe] were 60 [62] for 3 and 49 for 4 [in the first and second ODIs, respectively], but the boys didn't deal with the pressure well enough," Domingo said. "Too many knock-ons in the field, too many soft balls, too many balls bowled to the wrong field, wrong options taken. The boys are trying but they are not learning quickly enough. They are making those same mistakes over and over again. That's the most disappointing thing. Good teams will punish you in these conditions, where it is difficult to defend the scores. They got punished by four really good hundreds [two from Sikandar Raza, and one each from Innocent Kaia and Regis Chakabva] in the last two games.

"Bottom line is that you need hundreds to get match-winning scores. Some great lessons learned for us"

Russell Domingo

"You have got to give credit to Zimbabwe, particularly Sikandar, he has played fantastically well. Two of the better one-day hundreds you will find under pressure. We left 20 runs out [in both the ODIs]. It is very difficult to defend in the afternoon. Zimbabwe thoroughly deserved the win in both those matches."

Domingo pointed out Bangladesh could have been in a better position had one or more of their batters played long innings. In the first, Bangladesh's top four got fifties, but Litton Das' 81, before he retired hurt, was the best. In the second, Mahmudullah's 80 not out was the best effort.

"It is very difficult to criticise the one-day team, based on their performance of the last year-and-a-half," Domingo said. "They have had some amazing results and fantastic wins. Batting second here is a bit of a factor but there's a lot of work to be done. Zimbabwe has four hundreds, we have got none. Bottom line is that you need hundreds to get match-winning scores. Some great lessons learned for us.

"The World Cup is still a year-and-a-half away. Fortunately, these games don't count for [World Cup qualifying] points. We have got to see it as a great learning experience."

"We didn't have couple of important players in both formats. We didn't have Shakib [Al Hasan, for the T20Is], Mustafizur and Litton didn't play today. Hopefully they are back and fit," Domingo said. "The confidence is not high in T20s at the moment. Although we have made some improvements in our batting in the last couple of games, we have some way to go. It takes one or two wins in that format to get a bit of momentum."
