Democrat Mary Peltola defeats Sarah Palin in special election for Alaska's House seat

Democrat Mary Peltola is projected to win the Alaska special general election for the state’s sole House seat, ABC News reports.

Peltola defeated two Republicans -- former Republican Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Nick Begich -- and will be the first Democrat to represent the state in the House in nearly half a century, succeeding Rep. Don Young, who died in March.

Peltola will also be the first Alaska Native to represent the state in Congress.

Begich had been knocked out under the ranked-choice rules; Peltola defeated Palin about 51-49%.

“What’s most important is that I’m an Alaskan being sent to represent all Alaskans. Yes, being Alaska Native is part of my ethnicity, but I’m much more than my ethnicity,” Peltola said following the announcement of the results according to the Anchorage Daily News.

The election, which was called on Wednesday some two weeks after voting ended, was historic for a more technical reason: It was the first Alaska race that used ranked-choice ballots.

The process -- which advocates said would encourage more consensus-building but Palin criticized as "convoluted" -- worked like this: If a candidate in the election had initially won more than 50% of first-choice votes, they would have won the race outright. That didn't happen in the special race on Aug. 17. (Peltola initially ended up with about 40%.)

Then, the candidate with the least amount of first-place votes -- Begich -- was eliminated and that candidate's voters instead had their ballots redistributed to their second choice until one candidate got at least 50%.

Peltola is an indigenous Yup-ik Alaskan and former member of the Alaska House of Representatives. As a state lawmaker, she chaired the bipartisan Bush Caucus of rural politicians. In addition, she served in the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission before leaving for her congressional campaign.

On the trail, she prioritized climate change, responsible resource development and infrastructure for airports, ferries, highways and energy grids.

Peltola will only serve the remainder of Young’s term, which ends in January. She is on the ballot again in November -- along with Palin and Begich -- to try and win a full two-year term.

In a statement Wednesday, Palin repeated her criticism of ranked-choice voting, saying it "was sold as the way to make elections better reflect the will of the people" but that it has the "opposite" effect.

She said that "though we’re disappointed in this outcome, Alaskans know I’m the last one who’ll ever retreat. Instead, I’m going to reload. With optimism that Alaskans learn from this voting system mistake and correct it in the next election, let’s work even harder to send an America First conservative to Washington in November."

KARACHI: PTI has retained the NA-245 seat of Karachi on Sunday in the by-poll held for the election of the constituency’s new lawmaker after the seat fell vacant following the death of Aamir Liaquat Hussain, who was elected on a PTI ticket in 2018.
The polling process started at 8am and continued till 5pm today (Sunday). However, the polling time was extended by an hour at Polling Stations 55, 143 and 144. Aamir Liaquat beat Dr Farooq Sattar in 2018 after securing 56,673 votes. Unofficial results from 263 polling stations showed PTI's Mehmood Maulvi secured the seat with 29,475 votes.

MQM-P's Mueed Anwar was in second with 13,193 votes, TLP's Muhammed Ahmed Raza secured 9,836 votes, Farooq Sattar bagged 3,479 votes and MQM-H came last with 1,177 votes.

As per the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) the voter turnout was 11.8% in the by-poll.

The polling for the by-poll was held amid strict security on the 263 polling stations. Out of the 263, 60 were declared sensitive and 203 most sensitive.
The by-poll in this constituency was scheduled for July 27, however, the ECP postponed the election owing to the lashing rains in the metropolis. PTI leader Ali Zaidi said that results showed who the people of Karachi are supporting. “This was a difficult contest due to the rains. The whole city is destroyed yet people came out to vote,” said the PTI leader.

  • ECP de-notofied Soomro from NA-196 Jacobabad due to long absence.
  • Court says Soomro should have submitted a leave application.
  • Mohammad Mian Soomro is currently abroad, will return on Sept 27.

The Islamabad High Court Friday barred the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) from holding by-elections on the vacant seat of Muhammad Mian Soomro.

Barrister Zainab Janjua, the petitioner’s lawyer, presented her arguments before Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb. Soomro’s counsel told the court that her client was elected from constituency NA-196 Jacobabad and is one of those PTI MNA who didn’t resign.

She further added that National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf declared the seat vacant due to the member's absence from the lower house for 40 days.

“The petitioner is out of the country and cannot travel much due to health issues; however, despite this, the ECP de-notified the MNA and announced by-polls,” Soomro’s counsel told the court.

However, Justice Aurangzeb said that the petitioner did not submit a leave application and remained absent from the assembly for 40 days.

After hearing the arguments, the court refrained the ECP to hold by-elections on the NA-196 Jacobabad seat until the next hearing scheduled to be held in September.

Justice Aurangzeb directed Barrister Janjua to confirm from her petitioner regarding his plans to go to the assembly because his presence will be mandatory. To this, the counsel informed the court that his client will return on September 27 and will then go to the assembly.

The court directed that registrar high court to schedule the next hearing in September.

Last week, the ECP had de-notified Soomro from NA-196 Jacobabad, under Clause (2) of Article 64 of the Constitution after the decision of National Assembly.

Two women fight over seat in Delhi Metro

You must have witnessed many fights over a bus seat but recently a video of two women fighting over a seat in Delhi Metro is going viral on social media.

In the viral clip, a woman in a yellow saree is seen seated comfortably with her bag on an empty seat while a woman in orange kurta struggles to find a seat for herself in Delhi Metro. The argument begins when the woman, wearing saree, says she won’t offer the empty seat and the other woman goes on to sit in the small gap between her and another passenger.

The woman in the yellow saree said that she had reserved the empty seat for someone she’s waiting for but the other woman says she can’t reserve a seat like this. The kurta-clan woman forcibly sits at the empty gap squeezing the other woman.

The first woman then says that she can’t make her sit on her lap, to which the kurta woman responds saying she’s not asking to sit in her lap.
