US jury awards families $31M over graphic pictures of Kobe Bryant crash

Los Angeles County will have to pay $16 million to Vanessa Bryant and $15 million to co-plaintiff Chris Chester, whose wife and daughter also died in January 2020 crash, for sharing crash pictures.

Kobe Bryant's widow Vanessa Bryant tearfully testified during 11-day trial that news of photos compounded her still-raw grief a month after losing her husband and daughter.

A US jury has ruled that Los Angeles County must pay Vanessa Bryant, Kobe Bryant's widow, $16 million for emotional distress caused by deputies and firefighters sharing photos of the bodies of the NBA star and his daughter taken at the site of the 2020 helicopter crash that killed them. The nine jurors who returned the unanimous verdict on Wednesday agreed with Vanessa Bryant and her attorneys that the photos of the remains of Kobe Bryant and their 13-year-old daughter Gianna invaded her privacy and brought her emotional distress.  The jury deliberated for four-and-a-half hours before reaching the verdict. Vanessa Bryant cried quietly as it was read. An attorney for the county declined to comment on the verdict outside the courtroom. The pictures were shared mostly between employees of the LA County sheriff and fire departments, including by some who were playing video games and attending an awards banquet. They were also seen by some of their spouses and in one case by a bartender at a bar where a deputy was drinking. Vanessa Bryant tearfully testified during the 11-day trial that news of the photos compounded her still-raw grief a month after losing her husband and daughter and that she still has panic attacks at the thought that they might still be out there. "I live in fear every day of being on social media and these popping up," she testified. "I live in fear of my daughters being on social media and these popping up." READ MORE: Kobe Bryant's body identified among helicopter crash victims 'A gruesome curiosity' Her co-plaintiff Chris Chester, whose wife and daughter were also among the nine people killed in the crash, was awarded $15 million. Vanessa Bryant's attorneys did not give jurors a dollar amount they thought their client deserved, but Chester's attorney gave them suggested guidelines that would have meant tens of millions for each plaintiff. Vanessa Bryant's lawyer Luis Li told jurors that the close-up photos had no official or investigative purpose, and were mere visual gossip‚ shared out of a gruesome curiosity.  County attorney J Mira Hashmall argued during the trial that the photos were a necessary tool for assessing the situation. She acknowledged that they should not have been shared with everyone who saw them. But she emphasised that the photos had never appeared publicly, and had never even been seen by the plaintiffs.  She said that meant that Sheriff Alex Villanueva and other officials had taken decisive and effective action when they ordered those who had the photos to delete them. Kobe Bryant, the former Lakers star, five-time NBA champion and member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, was travelling with Gianna and seven others to a youth basketball game when the helicopter they were aboard crashed into hills in Calabasas west of Los Angeles on January 26, 2020. Federal safety officials blamed pilot error for the crash.  The jury returned its verdict on Kobe Bryant Day, which is celebrated on August 24 because it uses both of his jersey numbers – 8 and 24 – and is the day after his birthday. Tuesday would have been Kobe's 44th birthday. READ MORE: Kobe Bryant’s rookie home jersey sold for $2.73M at US auction Source: AFP

Scott Disick suffered minor injuries in a car crash over the weekend

Deputies said alcohol was not a factor in the crash and Disick was the only occupant in the car. "It was determined the primary cause of the traffic collision was speed and alcohol was not a factor. Mr. Disick suffered minor, non-life threatening injuries and declined medical treatment," the Sherrif's Department said in a statement to CNN. "He was picked up from the scene by family members and his vehicle was towed away per his request," they added. CNN has reached out to Disick's representative for comment.

On this day in history, August 15, 1935, entertainer Will Rogers, aviator Wiley Post killed in plane crash

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Two icons of the Depression-era United States were killed in a plane crash in the northern reaches of Alaska while seeking a mail route to Russia on this day in history, August 15, 1935.

"Cowboy philosopher" Will Rogers was a vaudeville performer, newspaper columnist, Hollywood leading man and one of most famous Americans of his era.

Daring aviator and air travel pioneer Wiley Post was the first person to fly solo around the world; he was an innovator in high-altitude flying and pioneer of instrumentation flying.

The Wiley Post-Will Rogers Memorial Airport in Utqiaġvik, Alaska, is named in their honor.

ON THIS DAY IN 2003, BOB HOPE, BELOVED BY GENERATIONS OF TROOPS, DIES AT AGE 100

Rogers was arguably America's original multimedia star, according to the website of the Will Rogers Memorial Museum & Birthplace Ranch in Claremore, Okla.

"Will Rogers was the no. 1 radio personality, he was no. 1 at the movie box office, he was the nation's no. 1 most sought after public speaker [and] he was the no. 1 most-read newspaper columnist," the site states.

"He wrote books, traveled the world and gave liberally to charities around the world."

Rogers had a gift for skewering the political elite with his folksy aphorisms befitting his rural Okie upbringing.

"I don't make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts," he said in one of his most oft-repeated quips.

"A fool and his money are soon elected," Rogers also said.

Post flew around the world twice. He first circumnavigated the globe piloting the Winnie Mae in eight days in 1931 accompanied by navigator Harold Gatty.

The achievement made Post a national celebrity.

His record solo voyage around the world in 1933, also aboard the Winnie Mae, covered nearly 16,000 miles and took just seven days, 18 hours and 49 minutes.

"On this flight he proved the value of navigational instruments, including the automatic pilot," reports Britannica of the achievement.

Rogers enjoyed a rather unique ascension into the national consciousness.

A globe-trotting trick roper as a young man, he worked shows demonstrating his skills as far away as South Arica and Australia.

He was at a horse expo at Madison Square Garden in 1905 when a runaway bull tried to race into the stands. Rogers roped and restrained the bull, gaining significant national publicity for his heroics.

Rogers and Post sought to establish a mail route from the American West Coast to Russia, via Alaska.

An avid supporter of aviation, Rogers joined Post as they sought to establish a mail route from the American West Coast to Russia, via Alaska.

Actress Anne Heche declared 'legally dead' after crash

Heche, best known for 1990s movies "Donnie Brasco" and "Six Days, Seven Nights", crashed her car into a two-storey house in the Mar Vista neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

Heche, 53, had been comatose in hospital with a severe brain injury since the fiery collision on August 5.

Hollywood actor Anne Heche has been declared legally dead, one week after she crashed her car into a Los Angeles building.

Having lost all brain function, she is "legally dead according to California law," though her heart is still beating as her family keeps her body on life support while exploring organ donations, spokesperson Holly Baird said on Friday.

Heche, 53, had been comatose in hospital with a severe brain injury since the fiery collision on August 5.

"Today we lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend," the family said in a joint statement.

"Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy.

"Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact."

Heche, best known for 1990s movies "Donnie Brasco" and "Six Days, Seven Nights", crashed her car into a two-storey house in the Mar Vista neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

The violent collision resulted in "structural compromise and... heavy fire" at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The ensuing blaze took 59 firefighters more than an hour to contain and fully extinguish, the department said.

Local media reported on Thursday that preliminary tests of Heche's blood had come back positive for narcotics, though more were needed to ensure the drugs had not been administered in the course of her treatment.

Celebrity gossip outlet TMZ, citing unnamed police sources, said Heche had tested positive for cocaine and fentanyl, with the latter sometimes used for pain relief in clinical settings.

"My brother Atlas and I lost our Mom," Heche's son Homer Laffoon said in a separate statement.

"Hopefully my mom is free from pain and beginning to explore what I like to imagine as her eternal freedom," he wrote.

Heche rose to fame with her role on the soap opera "Another World," for which she won a Daytime Emmy in 1991.

She was nominated for a Tony award for her appearance in "Twentieth Century" on Broadway in 2004.

Anne Heche 'not expected to survive' crash injuries, rep says

"Unfortunately, due to her accident, Anne Heche suffered a severe anoxic brain injury and remains in a coma, in critical condition. She is not expected to survive," the statement read. "It has long been her choice to donate her organs and she is being kept on life support to determine if any are viable."

Anoxic brain injury occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen.

A woman inside the home at the time of the crash suffered minor injuries, but did seek medical attention, according to Lee.

Heche has remained in critical condition. This week, a spokesperson for Heche told CNN the actress suffered "significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation" and "burns that require surgical intervention."

"We want to thank everyone for their kind wishes and prayers for Anne's recovery and thank the dedicated staff and wonderful nurses that cared for Anne at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills hospital," the statement continued.

In their message, her family and friends also paid tribute to Heche's "huge heart" and "generous spirit."

"More than her extraordinary talent, she saw spreading kindness and joy as her life's work -- especially moving the needle for acceptance of who you love," the statement read. "She will be remembered for her courageous honesty and dearly missed for her light."

Heche rose to fame on the soap opera "Another World," where she played the dual role of twins Vicky Hudson and Marley Love from 1987 to 1991. She earned a Daytime Emmy Award for her performance on the show.

Heche followed that success with numerous films, including "Donnie Brasco," "Wag the Dog" and "Six Days Seven Nights" opposite Harrison Ford.

In more recent years, Heche has appeared in television shows like "The Brave," "Quantico," and "Chicago P.D."

Following the crash, there was an outpouring of support for the actress from the Hollywood community. Her ex and former "Men in Trees" co-star James Tupper, with whom she shares one of her two sons, wrote on Instagram: "Thoughts and prayers for this lovely woman, actress and mother tonight Anne Heche. We love you."

Indiana funeral set for GOP Rep. Walorski killed in crash

GRANGER, Ind. -- The funeral for Indiana Republican U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski will be held Thursday in her home state of Indiana, where she and three other people were killed in a head-on highway crash.

The funeral is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. at Granger Community Church, Palmer Funeral Homes said on its website.

Walorski, who was 58, was in an SUV with two members of her staff on Aug. 3 when it crossed the median of a northern Indiana highway for unknown reasons and collided with an oncoming vehicle near the town of Wakarusa, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office said.

Walorski, her 27-year-old staffer Zachery Potts of Mishawaka, who was driving, and her 28-year-old communications director, Emma Thomson of Washington, D.C., all died, as did the woman who was driving the vehicle struck by their SUV.

Potts was Walorski’s district director and the Republican chairman for northern Indiana’s St. Joseph County.

Walorski was first elected to represent northern Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District in 2012 and was seeking reelection this year in the solidly Republican district.

Walorski's husband, Dean Swihart, said in a statement Wednesday that he was "touched by the support and kindness" the family has received since her death.

“Her loss leaves a massive void in our family, our community and in Congress,” Swihart said. “Our family remains focused solely on celebrating Jackie’s memory and mourning her loss as she returns home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb has set a special election to fill the remainder of Walorski's current term running through the rest of this year for the same date as the Nov. 8 general election.

Under Indiana law, it will be up to local Republican officials to decide nominations for the special election and to replace Walorski on the ballot for the full two-year term. The state Republican Party has scheduled an Aug. 20 caucus meeting for those selections. No Republican candidates have yet announced for the seat.

4 riding in golf cart killed in crash at Texas intersection

GALVESTON, Texas -- Four people riding in a golf cart were killed — including two juveniles — when an allegedly intoxicated man driving an SUV ran a stop sign at an intersection in Southeast Texas, police said.

Miguel Espinoza, 45, has been charged with four counts of intoxication manslaughter in the crash about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in Galveston, roughly 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Houston, police said.

Espinoza was being held in Galveston County jail Sunday on $400,000 bond, police said. Jail records did not list an attorney for him.

Galveston police Sgt. Derek Gaspard said that after the SUV failed to stop, it struck a pickup truck, which then crashed into the golf cart that had six people aboard. He said that the golf cart and pickup were traveling in opposite directions through the intersection on a street that did not have a stop sign.

Police said the adult driver of the golf cart was pronounced dead at the scene while a woman and two juveniles on the golf cart were taken to a hospital, where they died. The two other passengers — an adult and a juvenile — were hospitalized Sunday in critical condition, police said.

Espinoza, who lives in the Houston-area city of Rosenberg, and his passenger had minor injuries, police said. They were taken to the hospital and later released.

The occupants of the pickup were not injured, Gaspard said. Names and ages of the dead weren't immediately released.

Gaspard said that he believes the golf cart, which was rented, was operating legally on the city street. He said members of two different families were riding on the golf cart at the time of the crash.

Galveston Mayor Craig Brown said golf carts have become “quite a prolific mode of transportation” for residents and visitors to the island resort area, which is located on the Gulf of Mexico.

Brown said that the city has in the past put in place ordinances aimed at make operating them safer, and will be considering additional ordinances at an upcoming City Council meeting.

“I was out last night," Brown said. “The island was busy and there were golf carts — residential as well as rental golf carts — out all over these streets.”

———

This story has been updated to correct that Miguel Espinoza lives in Rosenberg.

At least 12 people have died and 43 suffered injuries, 18 of them seriously, after a Poland-registered bus skidded from a highway in northern Croatia.

The bus was traveling in the direction of Zagreb, Croatia's capital, on Saturday.

"All the victims are Polish citizens — we can at this point confirm this," a Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson told Polish private broadcaster TVN24. "The bus has Warsaw registration plates."

“Representatives of our embassy are going to the scene of the accident. The Croatian deputy prime minister and the minister of internal affairs are also going,” the spokesperson, Lukasz Jasina, said.

The broadcaster showed video of a smashed blue bus in a ditch next to the highway.

The accident happened around 5:40 am (0340 GMT), some 50 kilometres north of Zagreb, on the A-4 highway, which is busy during the peak of the tourist season.

The passengers were adult pilgrims who were travelling to Medjugorje, a Roman Catholic shrine in southern Bosnia, Croatian Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic told reporters.

The most likely cause of the crash was the driver falling asleep, authorities said. Rescue teams were sent to the location of the accident, Croatian media reported. An investigation into the cause of the accident was under way.

Anne Heche in critical condition following fiery car crash

The driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when she ran off the road and collided with a residence, Los Angeles Police Public Information Officer Jeff Lee tells CNN. The impact left the car engulfed in flames and the driver suffered burn injuries. She was taken to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics in critical condition. It took firefighters more than an hour to "access, confine and fully extinguish the stubborn flames within the heavily damaged structure," the LAFD said.

There were no other injuries reported.

CNN has contacted representatives of Heche for comment.

Heche first rose to fame on the soap opera "Another World," where she played the dual role of twins Vicky Hudson and Marley Love from 1987 to 1991 and earned a Daytime Emmy Award for her performance. She followed that with roles in films like "Donnie Brasco," "Six Days Seven Nights," and "Wag the Dog."

Her romantic relationship with Ellen DeGeneres in the late '90s resulted in intense media attention at the time, much to Heche's professional frustration. In a 2021 interview with Page Six, Heche said she felt "blacklisted" after going public with their relationship.

"I didn't do a studio picture for 10 years," said Heche, who dated DeGeneres from 1997 to 2000.

Heche has appeared in numerous television series more recently, including "The Brave," "Quantico," and "Chicago P.D." She has several acting projects currently in post-production, according to her IMDB profile.
